Is their a difference in length between the 42 & 45? If not then the DS would be same since it goes into the transfer case and not the trans.

Also curious about adding the 45 to a late model. Would the computers know the difference or care?
Yes there is considerable length difference, and yes a 45RFE TCM would need to be installed,45RFE torque converter,45RFE flex plate, possibly a new starter also, new driveshafts, new crossmember, and new exhaust is also needed since the 42RLE equipped KJ routes the exhaust a different way that would interfere with the 45RFE.

The 42RLE is a good transmission, maybe not the best, but it's a good transmission. I would recommend adding the TransGo Shift Kit.

Do you have a part # for the shift kit for the 42RLE? Thanks

Just a basic one that applies to all auto's,fill torque converter with at least 1-2qts of ATF+4 and make darn sure it is fully seated in the pump before install.Loosely install every torque converter bolts 1st before torquing them all down, takes more time but easier in the long run. Also never use the bellhousing bolts to "suck" the trans into place unless you feel like buying a new trans from having broken pieces come off the bellhousing. One other thought is to install trans 1st with the t-case adapter installed and then install the t-case,kinda a pain when everything is bolted together to install as one assembly.

Wes, a little off topic but I see you are running 32 inch tires. Are you still at 5.5 lift? I got a touch more then 3" now and my 31s are looking small, was wondering if I could fit the same size tire as you. Is there enough room?

I am still running the 5.5 inch lift.. there is plenty of room for my 32's im sure you wouldn't have any problems except for the front rubbing the flares and pinch weld, if you havent taken care of those spots already..

tjkj,

Are there any seals on the liberty trans that need to be replaced before install?

If the F/R input seals are leaking it's a good time to change them, that's about it.

Thanks Wes, your current setup looks very proportioned. In other words, kick stupid.

IIRC, the 2003 had the 45s early and 42s later. Call your dealer, give them your VIN to verify which trans you have. Maybe your guy was wrong, maybe they sent the wrong one?

Count the number of bolts holding the oil pan on. 13 bolts=42rle.

A picture would be great too. :)

Well, I called the delaer gave em the vin and they told me I have the 45.. the mechanic was wrong. I figured I should have said something to them when I saw the sticker on the trans reading " RFE " but, i figured I woul dkeep my mouth shut since im not the full time mechanic like they are.. next time ill remember to say something. you would think with one guy on a computer looking it up and one guy under my jeep looking at the trans they surely couldn't screw it up with the two of them..

oh well...

so, I called the place I bought my trans from and they are shipping me out a 45 and returning the 42 i ordered. gonna cost me 300 more due to the shipping and because the 45's are a bit harder to come by and a tad more expensive.

so where is this valve body side plate and does anyone have a part number?
Is that what it's called because I can't find it in the service manual or in the parts fiche.
Thanks!!

I'm guessing that would be the 'accumulator cover 04799598AB' on the 545

or the replacement 'accumulator kit 5174633AA'
