I tried doing a search on this topic, but the search page kept freezing up. So I apologize in advance if this has been posted many times before.

How common is it for oil to be leaking from the turbo. Dealership is replacing my turbo and hoses under warranty and Im wondering how many other people have had this issue.

Thanks

Happened to me. Photos are posted up here. The had to order the parts, took a week. After they got the parts, they found out the clamps are one use, took another week for the clamps. Between repair and rental, it was a $1K day.

I think you're confusing 2 things

There should not be oil leaking from the turbo - if there is the turbo is dead or about to die.

however all CRD's have oil in the turbo hoses - it's a design feature - part of the crankcase vent system.

That's what the EHM and Provent are all about.

Mine did. The oil was pouring out all over the oil filter. I have pics posted up here.

Mine cracked the steel pressure line at the fitting going to the turbo and made a big mess. At first glance it looked like the oil filter was leaking.

Exactly what happened to me. I was pissed that the guys who changed the oil didn't tighten the filter enough.

This was my first clue that something was terribly wrong:

That is what I thought when I brought the jeep in explaining to them that oil was leaking somewhere around the turbo. I expected them to say one or more of the hoses were shot. Their tech came back and said it was the turbo that was leaking, and it and the hoses needed to be replaced. Maybe they wanted some extra money out of chrysler, or maybe the turbo was shot. Either way, Im glad I have a new turbo before the warranty expires, but Im not so thrilled about the turbo going after only 65k miles.

The pic above was taken in Grand Island, NE. I made it all the way to SLC, UT by pouring oil in faster than it leaked out. Turbo still worked fine. I now have 80k miles on the ODO.

Mine did the same thing leaked oil about a 1 inch spot after sitting all night. It was driving me crazy, that oil is a witch to clean up as is all deisel oil.

I changed the oil discovered it was coming from the return tube which goes back into the block and is flanged on the bottom of the turbo. After changeing the oil, which was supposed to have been last serviced at dealership and replacing with Lucas 0W-40 full synthetic the leak stopped and has not been back knock on wood. I think the leak may be caused in part by old oil or the wrong oil. I have about 8,000 miles since my last oil change and no leaks yet.

No one really answered the original question about the seals in the turbo. I was wondering the exact same thing since I have recently been told the exact same thing by my Chrysler dealer. However, this is already my second turbo AND since I'm no longer covered by extended warranty (was the first time), my brother and I were going to attempt to change the seals ourselves. Which brings me to my next questions. I found this post on a search (imagine that, it worked). Does anyone know the part# for the seal kit? Is there a seal kit? Who makes our turbos? What's the model# for the turbo? And finally, anyone attempted this procedure and care to do a write-up?

Two side notes... I will definitely post a write-up if I'm the first to do so (and also successful in my endeavor). Second, I will definitely be cleaning the MAP sensor and be performing a EHM until a Provent can be purchased, in an attempt to prevent having to replace the turbo seals. Eventually, I'd like to get some Samco hoses and do the ORM. There is a small sense of freedom once no longer covered by extended warranty.

Thanks,
Mike

I may be wrong, but I believe that it was GMCTD who pointed out that diesel turbos do not have seals.

This was the thread with the comment about turbo seals
http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?p=406062#406062

most likely problem is the oil line to/from the turbo - dealers replace turbo's because the warranty pays for it.
