In a week or 2 I should be picking up my new camper (trailer). It has a 30amp system in it. I'm looking for a generator with 3.8K watts for when I'm off road with it. Does anyone have any experiences with any? A 3,500 watt would do it but I want a few extra as a safe guard. Something that isn't real heavy and between $1,500 and $2,000 at the most.

Stay away from coleman powermate as they went out of business and its getting harder to find parts. Stores are trying to off load them cheap and fast. With generators, alot of people will say go honda or go home, they are very faithfull but expensive generators. very close to your price range. Honda, kawasaki, B&S,and Kohler enginewise is what your looking for. As for the electrical side, check the expected lifespan of the brushes for the motor this will keep you from replacing them all the time, a good week in the sticks can kill some brushes. Last, on the 220V plug, the 30 amp line, not all have a protection for that circuit, you want it, make sure that circuit has its own protection and is not relying on the camper breaker to trip. The first time you blow the circuit card on the back end of the generator will make for a really short trip.

Most campers only need 30amps to run the A/C, microwave, and coffee pot/curling iron(stupid women) at the same time. When you start to factor in those big hits, you may be looking for a deal on a 4-5kw generator and upping the price range a bit. It all dependes on the luxury you want, you could make it just fine with a 3kw 20 amp generator if don't mind juggling what appliances are on.

I've got a Lance 9.5 truck camper with a 2500 A/C and bought a Yamaha EF2800i which will run the a/c is about 66 lbs and 67 decibles, the next closest is Honda's 3000 w which is quieter but weighs 149 lbs. The Yam is small enough to mount on the back bumper.
