 Post subject: Water in trans, big deal?

So, i just did the trans go shift kit, during removal the valve body got COVERED in dirt (from the plug) I sprayed it off with hot water (not a lot).

I now have what appears to be water, on my dipstick, should I be worried?

It's not huge, but it's there.

I know water is not hydraulic fluid but it will evaporate, right?

It's much more likely to emulsify with the oil and cause problems down the road. The tranny only has a tiny vent tube to atmosphere. I'd drain it. You installed a plug in the pan while you had it off right? :wink:

I've changed fluid 4 times since I've had it, and never found a need for a drain plug :P

Water in auto trans fluid = damaged auto trans unless you completely flush the trans out with fresh ATF.

The small amount of H2O from the flushed vb is likely not to cause any problems B4 it all evaporates when the trans heats up - you should be concerned if the fluid on the dipstick is already emulsified, which would be pinkish in coloration, sorta like cottage cheese and strawberry juice - that usually occurs when a large quantity of water enters the pan, a cup or more - let it dehydrate into the ozone layer and go in peace, grasshopper............................

There is often some condensation in transmissions and engines which dont get warmed up often. Take a road trip with the dipstick open and it will all go away.

Thanks!, i hose clamped (lightly) a paper towel over the dipstick (really the breather should have been fine imho)

And put about 200 HARD miles on it.

Earlier when i stated, water on the dispstick, it was what appeared to be excessive condensation, that i had never seen before.

The fluid was defiantly not frothy or buttery
