Man, I never get that kind of MPG's. My best has been around 27, and I usually get around 24. Oh well.

I agree, running it a little harder @ 70-75 mph and 2200+RPM it seems like the turbo is at peak boost w/ helping w/ mpg boost. wonder if someone w/ a gauge can confirm.

Running up I-70 over the mountains at least it's easier for the turbo to pack in that thin air. I'm always running 65+ mph in the left lane over the passes, getting looks from big gasser V-8 SUVS, and keeping up w/ the big 3's Diesel trucks.

It boosts harder at 75 than 65, but I think RPM has as much to do with it. From what I have seen, 2100 RPM is the sweet spot for this motor. Anything between 2000 and 2350 is pretty good. I can still manage 26 mpg around 73 MPH (I am lifted and what not). North of that mileage goes down very fast.

My best mileage has been when I have kept the rpm around 2100 while cruising, the TC locked up, and with minimal boost on take offs.

The peak of the torque curve in the little VMM appears to be very atypical for a diesel engine. There was a thread where one of our members posted some dyno numbers, but I can't find it.

it was on the VM Motori web site - but they appear to have a new brochure

http://www.vmmotori.it/uploads/doc/1162.pdf

page 6 has a hp/torque curve - they used to have the BSFC curve on there too (it's basically a reflection of the torque curve)

At 60mph on the interstate I use no fuel at all. The semi that has crashed into me from behind simply pushes me along

I don't think that DCX used the same fueling map, which would have affected the curve somewhat.

Back on page one Chad said this

Keep in mind, that's with an InMotion Stage 2 tune.

That could make a big difference. As I recall InMotion started with a Europian MAP

According to James at InMotion, the Stage 2 tune will increase power without hurting economy provided you keep your foot out of it. Naturally, if you explore the new found power, mileage will drop.

I'm failrly heavy footed, and I never failed to get near 30mpg on the highway, and anywhere from 19 to 22mpg in the city.

My Grand Cherokee is currently turning in about 20mpg in the city, and 25mpg on the highway (at 70 - 80mph).

Diesel engines just ROCK! I'm loving my Grand more and more as it loosens up a bit. It was VERY stiff when I picked it up, but it's coming in nicely. I'm sure at 1600 miles, it's got a LOT more break in to do.

When you hit about 6,000 miles that engine will be run in a lot better, and your MPGs will improve compared to what you get now as well. At 12,000 miles your engine will probably be run in as good as it gets.

Well Im happy to be home. Final mileage report for the Jeep KJ CRD is as follows.

Tank one 37.65 MPG
Tank two 28.65 MPG (Drove from Denver to Grand Junction at 75 mph)
Tank three 34.43 MPG
Tank four 36.23 MPG

That bugger last tank I was trying for over 38, but I hit a constant head wind from Spokane all the way to Snoqualmie pass and that knocked her down to 36.

All in all Im impressed with the power and the mileage.

Tom

Glad you made it home safe.

She's a great vehicle. I miss her a lot. The Grand is really nice, but almost too nice for my taste. I miss the visceral, raw feel of the Liberty. It was positively more fun to drive, but I'm getting used to the GC. Gotta bond with it.

One thing is for sure, the GC might be a larger, heavier vehicle, and it doesn't have the low end punch of the InMotion tuned Liberty, but that sucker will ROLL on the top end. I had a tailgater riding my butt in rush hour this afternoon, and when the lane cleared, I pushed the pedal down. Even without a downshift, the thing pulled....and pulled.....and pulled.....I backed out at just over 100 but it was still pulling like a freight train. Now, THAT I liked. :)

Can't wait to put the InMotion tune on the GC. Come on 443ft/lbs of torque baby! :)

I love her Chad. Thanks for everything. I would have broken 38 MPG if not for that darn head wind I hit in Spokane.

I took the antenna off and folded in the mirrors. It makes a difference.

So what were the total miles driven and total gallons filled over the 4 days?

Man, I am happy with 29mpg at ~64 mph, hand calculated. evic reads ~31. I have never gotten above that. At 70 I get 24-25. Not complaining though.

The best run I ever had in my 03 CRD with 4.1 diff ratios (stock) was 27MPG. That was massively better than my average of 22MPG over the period I owned the jeep. I even had the Euro-SEGR and oil catch tank installed.
