OK,so yesterday my Dad came by and saw me tinkering around and asked what I was up to.I told him I was trying to get on board with the "Diesel Guys",and told him about how I would soon be changing to the Samco,explained the SEGR,and doing the EHM and why.Dad knows engines,and started talking greek-bla bla bla and something about the vacuum.
I thought that was the end of that and plans would go as planned.Nope.
Dad called me back later and said he did some searching,and would suggest doing the Provent or the Racor. :shock:
I was blown away and first began to wonder if he was a LOST member.He explained his case and now I guess I'll be usuing a ccv filter like many of you use,instead of the EHM.
I see many of you use the Provent.Has anyone used the Racor?
Which one to get,and why?

Racor dropped theirs for some reason, I blame the bean counters, what else could it be?

I did the EHM over the weekend. It does have a little bit of smell, but not bad, even when stopped.

I was a little worried about vacuum, etc, but I went in the tech section and read oldnavy's post about the EHM. It is my understanding that, in a normally aspirated engine, the CCV would be under positive pressure created by the movement of engine internals "pushing" against the valve. In our engines, that is the case, but with addition of "pulling" pressure from the turbocharger, as the CCV inlet is upstream of the turbo. Part of the design issue is that if the turbo sucks too much on the CCV, then it will literally pull oil into the turbo, wholesale. So therefore, the CCV puck in the CRD was designed with a pressure regulator valve to minimize the "pulling" of the turbo while allowing full "pushing" from the engine. This CCV puck apparently was a model for engineering failure, as it does not A.) prevent oil from entering the intake, and B.) does not efficiently regulate the pressure enough to make a difference.

After doing the EHM and running around a little, I pulled the plastic engine cover back off to see how much oil was in the hose. A very small amount had pooled in the hose just outside the CCV outlet. So that tells me that the gases/ oil exiting the CCV puck is not under a tremendous amount of pressure, or else it would have been blown all over the inside of the hose. that tells me I've done the engine a favor, by allowing it to fully breathe without the turbo "pulling" on it.

Can anybody else with more technical savvy speak in regards the pressure issues in the CCV system?

Yes - 2009 only 1500gvwr Diesel vehicles are required to CCV, Congressionally mandated to comply with EPA emissions standards - 2010, all Diesel engines, mobile: road\off-road, track\rail, ag, city\county maintenance, and stationary and marine, require CCV equipment - Provent has been DOT\EPA sanctioned, as indicated by FoMoCo authorizing dealer-installed Provent on all models not so-equipped from the factory - just prognostificating, here, but Federally-mandated DOT inspections are coming to your state shortly after Federally-mandated Digital TV, eh........................
