Rocket Jocky, A dead man ain't going to sue or testify.

SE7, Try this for your destruct device, it works well:

Radar detector emptied of electronic contents sealed and filled with a small amount of black powder and a model rocket igniter attached to the lighter plug wire and plugged in to the "lighter Plug only" When the ignition is turned on it goes off, or if they steal the radar detector and when the pawn shop test it and it explodes, crook goes to jail.

Want to end it all? Do the same with a power inverter packed full!

Crooks do sux

In the old days, a horse thief would be hung as a deterent to other horse thieves. This generally worked.

Today, we give the perp a personal shrink, a group hug, and try to analyze why they did such a bad thing.

I prefer the old days.

They had the Jeep ignition in the on postion and the Jeep was in reverse. So they did not need the chip in the key to do this

Thats how the chip works. It lets the vehicle run for a minimal amount of time, and if it can't locate the sentry key, it shuts down. Bet thats what happened.

I thought about doing something similar to my stereo deck. Modify the internal wiring to swap the location of, say, input power with maybe a speaker, interior lights, something like that. Make the mirror-image change on the wiring harness. When deck is plugged in with that harness, all is well, but when they reuse the deck elsewhere with a different harness (when stealing a deck, they just rip the harness), it will just blow fuses. Sure it may not stop the theif, but we may as well punish the purchaser of stolen goods as well.

That's a good thing

They took nothing out of the Jeep, which I can say is a good thing

Tomcat,

You are right,

Problem here in Sa TX, try getting the cops to even show up if your vehicle is broken into. They actually sent the cop to cite me for calling 911 four times in a 3 1/2 hour period, then he said "what you want us to do about it."

Now I deal with it myself.

It sucks, but it could have been worse for you. Glad to head he didnt get far with it.

So that looks like an aftermarket alarm will be my next mod for the Jeep.

Yes it could have been worse. They could have stole everything out of my Jeep, but they took nothing

There was very little damage to the door. Just a little dent from the screwdriver as they stuck it up under the handle

I will go and get some pics

The way the Jeep/DC security system works (at least up through the 04 model) is you can start the vehicle without the microchipped key. After about 10 seconds, and the RF transciever in the dash not getting the authentication code from the chipped key, the electrical junction to the engine is tripped. No starter + no spark + honking horn = no driving anywhere! I'm sure a really smooth, professional thief could find a way around this, but your average punk is not.

The problem with the stock system is that it's invisible. It works and will prevent your car from being stolen, but it's not going to stop a thief from wasting his time trying to steal your car if he doesn't know it's there. Same thing with cutoff switches. I bet a security system decal would be a better deterrant. I've always found security systems to be a pain in the booty going off everytime someone breathes on you vehicle too hard. Alarms are so common place now that people just ignore them.

Doubtful that'll ever be possible. You basically have two venues: first one is RFID snooping, but that requires that you be in close proximity to the legitimate RFID before you can power it and read it (and the associated antenna is not entirely inconspicuous). Secondly, you could try and replace the whole BCM/ECM with your own hacked versions, but seriously ... that's a bit much.
