For the last couple of outings my 05 kj is not coming out of 4hi. The handle shifts fine back into 2hi and the light goes out on the dash but I can stll hear it and feel it in 4x4. i have started to put the transmission into reverse and it seems to help however it may take several attempts or what seems to me to be too long of a drive backwards. I have never had this problem before the rig has 82000 miles on it and the transmission and t-case and rear end have all been serviced by the dealer....if anyone has info on this I would appreciate it. It does have a rusty's 2 1/2" coil lift since about 25000 miles but i don't see why that would matter. Thanks for the help.

trans case linkage may need to be adjusted

I always roll it backwards a few feet after shifting back to 2h (wrangler habit)
but it's never actually seemed to need it

mine has a slightly opposite issue, takes me 2 pulls to get it into 4hi

if i don't do a tug and wiggle it'll pop out of 4hi the first time i take my foot off the gas

Why did you have to do that?

Just how the wranglers 4wd system seemed to behave, when ya took it out of 4h it was basically common practice to throw it in reverse and back in 3 or 4 feet then go on about your business

troy could probably explain the specifics of why they had a tendancy to behave like that

not ALL of them did it, i noticed it particularly with the straight drive wranglers

231 or 242 ?-

the 242 shift mechanism - pushes against a spring which pushes against the gear - if there's a pressure difference front axle to rear axle - the gear won't move - pressure difference can be caused by different tires - and different can be wear, air pressure, different manufacturers ect.

both mine and the wrangler have the 231, however i've had the full-time 232 before and it frequently had the same behavior

one thing that i have noticed that helps get it out of 4h is getting it to about 10mph and putting it in neutral (or mashin the clutch) and pushing it back into 2h and usually just before the vehicle rolls to a stop it smoothly disengages but you can't always have that much room for disengaging thus the reverse roll is often what helps

and yea it's got something to do with tension on the left and right axles being different and holding pressure and keeping it locked in

Never had any issues with any t-case disengaging right away except a 242 t-case(had one in my '01 Grand). Now any vehicle with auto locking hubs and/or the infamous vacu-lock's the older wranglers had used take some backing up to disengage.

My 05 does the same thing on occasion. I have found that the above mentioned trick of reverse for a few feet does the trick.
