Hey, I figured it out a while back, I just wanted to put the correct information here so if anyone is trying to do this, the correct answer would come up somewhere in their search.

Image
viewtopic.php?f=45&t=63132

This is how to set up a three (3) position switch.
One is to have the lights come on automatically when triggered by another power source, ie: reverse lights/parking lights.
Two is off all the time
Three is turn them on independently.

    On the Switch
  • One side goes to fused power
  • Middle goes to trigger post 86 on relay
  • Other side goes to what you want to tap into (ie: reverse lights)

    On the Relay
  • 30 goes to fused power (B+ FEED on diagram)
  • 86 goes to middle terminal on switch (Trigger on diagram)
  • 85 goes to a ground (ground on diagram)
  • 87 goes to Aux Lights (ACC on diagram)

This is the correct Diagram to use with the wires going to where I just mentioned.
Image

Hopefully this helps someone.

--------------------------------------------------------------
Below is my Original Post, Which is quite confusing, read at your own risk. lol.

Hi, I'd like to apologize in advance if this is clearly explained somewhere, but I have been searching for a very long time and could not find what I am looking for.

I bought a set of fogs and installed them correctly and they work independantly with a switch,
BUT I want to have three scenarios, I know its possible and have read many threads on various websites.

Ideally, I'm looking for a correct diagram in which to accomplish this.

(Here are the three scenarios;
1. I would like to have them turn on automatically with the parking lights so I only have to flip one switch.
2. I would like to turn them on independently.
3. I would like to be able to turn my parking lights without the fogs coming on.

Now I know this is similar to hooking up Aux Reverse lights, and thats the next step, I just want to perfect this one first.
1. I would like to have them turn on automatically when shifted in reverse.
2. I would like to turn them on independently, when camping or working in the dark.
3. I would like to be able to shift into reverse without the Aux lights coming on, like when parallel parking in Manhattan, I dont need anymore attention. )

This is what I am using to accomplish this (or trying to):

I have a standard five pin automotive relay
and
a SPDT CENTER-OFF ROUND ROCKER SWITCH
I've used this diagram
and this one
I've even used KC Lites instructions, but their switch is to just turn the lights on when not in reverse, and doesn't allow for you to turn them on independently
I've read on another site that the correct way to wire the relay is this (which might work withought the ON-OFF-ON switch):

This is the diagram I modified for my application..
Quote:
Run a 12 gauge wire to the battery. Put it on post 30 of the relay.
Post 87 should run to the + side of the lights, and the lights should be grounded.
Post 85 on the relay should get grounded as well.
Then, run a thin, like 18 gauge wire from post 86 of the relay, and splice it on the + side of your OEM fog/reverse lights.

(I know I have an extra pin, 87a, which is always hot, and I've read I can reverse the 30 post and 87a so it won't always be hot, but I haven't gotten that far.)

If someone can help me with a correct diagram, or can label these diagrams correctly (IE: labeling the post number on the relay to where its supposed to go) that whould be amazing.

Again I'd like to apologize if this is simple but I can't figure it out.
Thanks in advance.

This is the diagram to use (which looks like the one you drew)

For the fog lights, instead of hooking up to the back up lights, hook it into the parking light circuit. This will accomplish what you want.

On the relay, hook the ground to 85 and the wire from the switch to 86 (it actually doesn't matter which wire goes to which of these terminals, just as long as one is on 85 and the other on 86). Hook your fused batt wire to 30 and the lights to 87 and/or 87a.

search for the back up light write up maybe in technical or fab sections, there is two different hookup writeups in there. Then just find the parking light wire and splice into it... done!

Where did you find that switch, I like the look of it.

Thanks everyone for the responses.. Although, I still haven't got it.. Everything works except for the parking lights.. Seems I don't have the correct wire sending the signal to tell it to turn on. If anyone might know which wire it is, or where it is, it would be much appreciated.
Or even if you know where the wire for the reverse lights are under the hood, just so I can test it and make sure the hookups are correct.
Thanks again.

Oh and for that switch I got it from a website called www.allelectronics.com they have anything and everything. Cheap too.

I ran a wire right up to the park lights to get the hot wire. Much easier to use a Multi-Meter to figure out whats what.

You mean right next to the bulb? Because that's what I did.. That didn't work.. It actually turned the parking lights on.. And with some different combos, it blew the fuse, I guess because it was sending power to the parking lights. I tried to trace the wire through the harness closer to the fuse block but the wire color changes..

I apologize for being completely clueless on this. Thanks again.

(I've searched and searched through the millions of pages on here and couldn't find anything)

If you have it hooked up the right, way would you be able to take a photo, or just take a look at how you have it and describe it to me? That would be amazing.

You will need two relays if you want everything to be independent but also automatic with the turning on of your parking lights.

Splice a wire from the hot side of parking lights to one of the relays so that the relay turns on when the parking lights are turned on (the relay uses VERY little power). Run a fused line from the battery to the other half of the relay and the other side from the relay to your fog lights. Then a wire from the other side of the fog lights to ground. Your AUX switch will control power to the second relay.

The relay is basically an electrically operated switch, which in your case, will be powered from your parking lights turning on or when your AUX switch is thrown. The relay uses low current to turn on a high current circuit. None of the high current circuit wires for the lights should be directly connected to the switch. That is...the switch should not be used to directly turn on the lights...definitely need a relay.

IMO - If it is a lighted switch, I would use the tap/splice from the parking lights to also the light connector on the switch. With this configuration the switch would light when you turn on your parking lights thereby indicating that the fog light circuit is now active and can be turned on with the AUX switch.

I think if you use my back-up light circuit and change the tap to the parking lights on your vehicle you will be good.

That sounds good, I'll have to try that.. but will I still have the ability to have them always off if I wanted to?

-------

So I havent played with anything in a while, but when I hooked it directly to the Parking light switch, which I found online that it is a pink/red wire coming from behind the steering wheel, straight from the switch itself, I was able to turn the headlights and parking lights on one side of the switch, and the other side turned the fogs on. Am I missing something? I feel like I need something between the parking light wire and the fogs/relay/switch.. is what Kugellager is telling me what to do the correct way to achieve what I'm looking for?

-------

Thanks again.

The way Kugellager has his wired, it looks like the aux lights would always come on with the back up lights...you could not override them off and I believe that was one of your requirements.

Ideally all I would want to do now (for the fogs atleast) is have them turn on with the factory parking light switch, and also be able to turn them off so they do not turn on with the parking lights.. I feel that would be easier. Since apparently I am a complete moron.

you only have two wires at the parking light.....you have a 50 / 50 shot. take your dmm or test light and find a good ground. with the parking lights on and the bulb removed, take the remaining probe and hit one of the terminals. if the light or dmm shows voltage, then that is the 12+. otherwise, check the other terminal and it should light up or show voltage.

when you popped the fuse, i'd be willing to bet you had the dmm set to measure amps rather than voltage.

I'm pretty sure I've done everything correctly. I found the right wire next to the bulb (the white one - not black) and as I mentioned before, I even hooked it up directly from the wire going to the BCM.
I guess I just gotta get out there and play around with everything again, and just see what happens.. I havent had time or daylight to do it. I'm sure all of you are tired of me already, but if I ever get it, or anything, I'll let you know, lol.

Thanks again.. x100

Alright, LAST post before I play with things again.. Is it possible I have the wrong relay, is that even possible? I have a 12V SPDT 30 AMP AUTOMOTIVE RELAY..

Not that anyone cares, because you're all fed up with me and selected "STOP WATCHING THIS TOPIC" like two weeks ago, lol, but I was able to tap into the parking lights, so when I turn the Parking lights on, the fogs turn on automatically.. I also put a switch in between the fogs and the relay so I can have my parking lights on without the fogs.. this will do just fine with my fogs.. let's see what happens when I get to my reverse lights, haha.

Thank you Everybody who took the time to give me some ideas and to help me try to figure this out.
