My A/C is making a "bearing about to go" noise. I believe it is the bearing on the clutch and (hopefully) not the compressor.
Jeep wants $275 for the clutch alone. Aftermarket wants $330 for clutch / compressor combo.
Obvioulsy, changing out the clutch is much simpler than changing out the compressor with all the associated draining / refilling, etc.

1. How do I determine that it is the clutch bearing for sure?
2. Anyone know of someplace cheaper to get parts?

If it makes the sound with the AC off.
it is likley the Pully/Clutch bearing.

I think the AC compersore is only being used with the AC is on.
So when the AC is off, the compesor is not moving at all

I might be worng. sorry

You never have replaced a compressor clutch before have you? Replacing the evaporator will seem like cake compared to the compressor clutch and you need to remove the whole dash to replace the evaporator core.

So it seems like I want to replace the entire compressor assy?
Place to get one cheapest?
What else needs to be done at the same time? - I saw in another thread something about changing something else at the same time but can't remeber what (collector or something like that?)

Just some advise, leave the AC replacement to professionals, if you start buying parts and attempt to do things on your own in the long run you may wind up in a shop for someone to do it anyway, you need the tools and the precise knowhow to do it correctly.

You need to replace the receiver/dryer and the orifice tube when you replace a compressor. You must 1st have the system evacuated with the proper equipment, then when the new parts are on you need to have the system pulled under vacuum and properly recharged with the correct amount of R134A.

if they are putting a 1 year warranty on the compressor and do not require you to replace any other parts, i would say go for it. in my oppion changing the drier and orifice is a bit over kill and is just an insurance policy for the manufacturer. i have changed many ac compressors in my previous cars and have never changed the orifice or dryer with never having a problem. just make sure you get a good garage to recover the gas, pull a good vacuum, and recharge the system. What ever you do DO NOT use the DIY recharge kits.

Oh yeah, def not a DIY on this one! Just wanted to be sure I was going down the right path. After what i read is required to do just the clutch and with 135K miles and 7 years, I might as well do the whole compressor. Could probl use new refrigerant buy now anyway.
Anyone have an idea on cost?

Update:

Got a price of $300 for the unit from NAPA
$119 to install from Strauss
plus additional $99.95 for the R134 coolant

Total of around $650 w/tax.

Sound like par?

sounds good to me. R134 is a little high but his labor is also cheap, so its a trade off

Chris,
Forget about replacing the clutch. it ia a big time hassel to do. Easy just to replaced the Comp. Usally when you do that, you should as a rule of thumb replace filter dryer (orrifice) accumelater along with the compressor.

I did mine a few months ago and it was easy. took about 3 hours. That was also with me pulling a 400Micron in the system.

I paid 289.00 for all the parts. I got a new comp kit with 5 year warranty compressor, dryer, and accum from a company in CA.
cant beat that. (oh yea I did the work my self. I am a universal HVAC tech)

I ordered all the parts as above. The guy even gave me "no shipping" as a special.
Just asked that I post his site info on our site.
