Strut help

I got the OME front HD coils and struts the problem is I'm not sure how to assemble the struts. Do I use any of the stock parts. Does anyone know of any post on this with pics.

If all you have is the unassembled coil and strut then you are going to re-use your strut mounting plate & hardware, the upper coil isolator, and bottom coil isolator.

You will require an air compressor, and a coil compressor to assemble the coil and stut.

Thanks are those OME or OEM. I would like to find a step by step of how to put them together I think I saw a post on here a long time ago but cant find it..

I'm looking for an instruction for you as well.

The picture above is the stock OEM strut and coil, I used the pic to show you the parts you are going to reuse.

You have two coils and 2 struts, everything seperate, no pre-assembly correct?

And do you have a coil compressor and air compressor?

not our exact parts, but the instruction is accurate minus the internal bumpstop. I'll see if I can find something better.

Have you already disassembled? or do you need complete instructions ie removal, disassemble, assemble, install?

I have seen this before. The OE struts do not have that plant the spring sits on. Will that come off my my stock ones. I have not done any thing yet. I plan on putting the lift in in about 2 or so weeks.

All you will need is the new coil, new strut, and you will reuse the original strut mount, upper rubber isolator, and lower rubber isolator. So yes the piece that sits between the strut and coil will come from your stock assembly.

I did find a pictorial write up on removal and install of the strut assembly, I can email you that if needed, just PM me with your email. And the link with the video for assembling the strut also has links for dis-assebling the strut, and compressing the coil as well. Though the parts shown in the video are not our exact parts, the same procedure is followed.

Please please do not use an air tool on a spring compressor unless it is a heavy duty proffesional one!

If you are using something like this:

...do it by hand. I almost lost a finger when one of those broke and came rocketing toward me. ( yep, I was using an air tool...)

don't bother with auto zone's strut spring compressor, atleast the one I rented from them will not work with ours

that type spring compressor won't even fit between our stock coils while they are assembled

don't forget to put the strut stem with the nut finger tight in a vice and turn your strut so that it expands out or you'll make a lot of funny faces wondering why you're having to compress the coils so much and still can't get the thread through the strut plate

this one is similar to the one i ended up borrowing to use

if you get one similar to borrow that has adjustable plates for the top strut plate that has slotted bolt holes and you can't get but 3 in it, you will probably have to turn the strut plate so that it's got 2 bolts through the holes on opposite corners in order to get the coil to compress straight, if the coil starts compressing crooked you'll have a heck of a deal trying to get the threaded portion of the strut stem through the hole in the strut plate[/img]

The one that Advance auto sells - Ampro T70570 - worked for CRD coils and OME 790's -
(although an electric impact would have saved a lot of time )

I did a set of OME HD + stock CRD(which were tighter than OME's) with autozone rentals pictured above just fine.

I have also used the set shown in Jeepinjarhead's top photo with out issue (on OME HD's, MD's and stock coils)

It is a little difficult removing the compressor clamps from the coil when compressed, I just used a pair of needle nose plyers to spread the coil to get the extra space needed to remove the compressor.

And yes I am guilty of using the air compressor to compress the coils, and yes it can be dangerous and is probably not advisable.

the pair that autozone rented to me would not fit within the stock coil as assembled under any stretch of the imagination - the picture i posted was an example of the type

if you assembled your coils with strut compressors that you had to beat to remove from the coil or beat into the coil, what you were doing was dangerous

That is the one I got. I have used it 3 times now. Works like a charm. Just add LOTS of elbow grease!!!

Take the assemblies off the take them and the new coils to a shop and pay them $40 bucks to disassemble and reassemble. With the HD coils this is a hard job that can heart you.

I tried to do my own and the coils bent sideways and put every thing in a bind. After three tries I took them to a shop and was still out the cost of the compressors. :evil:

Note: Before you dissemble the strut, mark where the top plate lines up with the ridge on the lower end of the strut (where the clevis mounts). Have it reassembled with that alignment.

Only on OEM shocks. Aftermarket shocks do not have that ridge..
