I am running the Premium Diesel 5w-40 and have been for the past 40K miles. I ordered a case of this European formula 5w-40 last week and intend to see whether it makes any difference. The premium diesel 5w-40 is intended for 2007 and later, but I'm not sure what that means for its performance. It's somewhat odd that Amsoil provides different data on different oils making comparison difficult.

Would i run amsoil? sure.

They make excellent oils.
And it might even be worth the price if you do long long oci's.

But i bet you don't.

I'm doing 10k oci's and extending (aiming for 15k or so, i started at 6k) with m1's tdt.

If you don't know what tbn is, or don't do oil analysis, you dont need amsoil.

If your changing your oil at 5-7k miles, I would use the least expensive easily sourced synthetic 5-40 in your area.
Witch would most likely be shell Rotella t 5w-40 at wall mart (BLUE BOTTLE) for around 19 bucks a gallon.

Take the cash you save and buy a better air or oil filter, or a ehm or whatever.

Or you could pay 26 + dollars a gallon for tdt and know your running one of the best oils on this planet.

The crd is not particularly hard on oil, but it can have a high soot load, and tdt handles it really really well. I have seen some uoa's in the past that showed really high wear metals (like 40+ fe) for various oils, and that scares me, because i'm usually in the mid-high 20 range, so unless your getting uoa's, you'll never know the difference anyway. (and in the case of <8k or so oci's, there may not be a significant one anyway)

It's your truck and your money, and your comfort level, and they are all different.

Some people simply like changing their oil. Some people like to know that they have put the best in there that they can buy. (witch a lot of people seem to think is amsoil)
Some like to get the best deal and protection possible by buying smarter and changing with uoa.

Bottom line for me is that i would be 10000000% happy with rt syn in 5w-40 with a wix or m1(301) filter for up to 7k (get a uoa for the first couple runs) That's going to fit the style and price for probably 95% of all crd users right there. You cant get much better for the mileage.
I have had exellent results with those products and mileages, and so have others here.

read some of these http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/vie ... sc&start=0

And go to bobistheoilguy.com and read there, and google up oil analysis

Again, you cant go wrong with amsoil, but it's not necessarily better for you. You could save the money and get the filter mod and a nice wix filter, or even a amsoil filter.

It's cool to get oil analysis. If your environment and driving styles are the same or similar, you can track changes with them, easily.

Like lowered si due to better air filtration, or less off roading. Or lowered wear numbers with reduced soot load, due to blocking off your egr.

Or finding a injector leaking before it destroys your engine, via the fuel contamination of your oil.

Edited for spelling, because i fail. :P

Shell Rotella-T 5w-40

I spend the bucks on the amsoil gear oil because they get changed less often and use less when they are changed, so it's not a much of a kick to the wallet. I do also use Amsoil filters, just not the motor oil.

I guess I look at it a little different.

The difference between $19/gal for the Rotella and the $26/gal for the Amsoil equates to $14 an oil change.

I change my oil at 5000 mile intervals, and drive about 15,000 miles a year.

So that's three oil changes a year. An extra $42 per year for me.

just for S's&G's, so ya know,
the Amsoil diesel oils run about $9 (DEO) and $9.28 (AFL) a qt. Shipped to your door, Including your local taxes.
Not a whole lot of difference between it and m1 for price. (based on 7 qts, crd takes 6.5-ish right?) Is it worth a difference of $14-ish for an oil change either way? who knows for sure.

Ah the oil controversy and how we stay loyal.
Count me in with Miller; I'm a Mobil1 5w-40 guy. Mobil 1 was developed for Formula 1 race cars in the 70's. Over 30 years of R&D. If it can handle the stress of 25,000 rpms for hours on end I'm sure it can do just fine in my little Jeep turning out a whopping 4,000 RPM when I get on it.
The specs for Rotella Syn and Mobil 5w-40 Turbo Diesel oil are pretty darn close. (Pull up the MTSD on their web sites) I have been getting Mobil 1 a few cases at a time for under $6 a qt. True, the Rotella is available at Wal Mart in the gallon jugs. When you do the math on a per qt. basis the Rotella is about $.20 a qt cheaper so I see no real point. That's again for me as I know many places sell Mobil 1 for $6.50 and up. ($10 at the stealerships)

Amsoil is really close to tdt/m1 (price wise), but for me the deciding factor was availability.

I seemed to have had excessive consumption with rotella t, witch i do not have with tdt, or the 0-40 from m1
Also i could easily find tdt in gallon jugs AND quarts, where as 0-40 was harder to locate. (I spent 4 hours trying to find a quart in vegas last year, finally found one at a napa but it was discolored and covered in dust)

Also while in Memphis (on vacation), i found 5 gallons of TDT for 22 dollars each (red tag) at wall mart (in Bartlett Tn on 64 highway in the Wolfchase area).

And that began my Turbo Diesel Truck extended Oil Change Interval quest.

If i could find amsoil on the shelf next to m1, I would try it.

In my area, tdt is around 26$/gal srt is from 19-22 $/gal and 0-40 is about 9.49/qt (37.96/gal)

Without shipping on the Amsoil site DEO (5-40 diesel) (exellent oil!) is 34.1 bucks a gallon.

AFL (0-40 euro) is 8.88 a qt (35.52 a gallon)

I'd use any of those oils (except for maby the afl, witch i know nothing about)
for at least 7k miles, without blinking. Witch i think, makes it painfully obvious witch oil is better.

Clearly Shell's rotella T is a exellent oil, the price is right, and for most of the crd users who change at 5k or so, perfect.

I would need to get like, 13k miles and excellent wear numbers from DEO to make it worth the trouble, And one day, I may :p. I don't really want to run out past 11-12k anyway, i dont think i would be comfortable there. I would probably have to change my filters by then anyway. I've thought about a bypass but i don't have the real estate and i worry about leaking lines. We'll see : ).

The cost is always a factor, especially in today's economy. As I said, the one benefit of living in NJ is the diesel/gas prices are the cheapest in the country on average. We don't have any bio though
I posted this link before, but this is where I buy the Mobil 1 for under $6 a qt.
http://www.primelubeinc.com/

I drive up and pay so I'm not paying any shipping. If it wasn't for this, I'd be buying the Rotella full Syn at Wal Mart. Interestingly enough, the Wal Mart price for Mobil 1 5-40 is $6.97 a qt. They sell it individually or by the gallon. Also, some think the gallon is always cheaper, but look at the price per qt. sticker next to the price of that gallon. The Mobil 5-40 by the gallon retails here for $7 a qt.... and the gallon is only equivalent to 4 qts so if you're not paying attention you kind of get hosed.
Miller, when you are talking bypass, are you talking of those remote oil filter locaters? I was thinking the same, but again, space is tight. If you remove the front part of the factory air box (if you still have) you can mount to the radiator support on the passenger side. This is where I mounted my version of the provent.
