I'd be down for just that rear section. It would help a fair amount in roll over. The KJs roof is already really strong as far as 4x4s go so that little extra insurance would be great.

I got an email a week or 2 ago from them and they said the cage was just like their XJ cage and can be made with extra parts or less than the one in these pics, which is the XJ kit. Looks pretty good, but there would be parts I'd get rid of for sure.

If I were you I would check with the guy that made your rear bumper, see what it would cost you from him to have a cage made.

I had read somewhere that bends in the tube like the one in the front by the dash are week spots, I can see how that would be true. I have seen other cages where the tube goes through the dash eliminating the bends. Just thinking, I really have no experience with this.

Yeah, I wondered about that and think you're right.

As far the bends. I think they would be OK since there is a structural roof there already and the roll bar is extra insurance. But I would want straight tubes if I were a topless rig.

*edit*
I just reread what I wrote and it made no sense. I fixed it.

I could see that because if you roll the bend is already started, so I think it would be a weak spot but I also dont think its gonna make it weak enough that you would need to worry about it, if the cage is properly built

I agree, I also think Inc raised a good point about having the structured roof.

are you serious?! .25 (1/4") wall that is going to be a lot of extra dead weight, most do .120 wall (1/8")

I'll be doing like jsc7002 says I think and going with the .120 wall, 1.5" tube. I'm not crazy about exo cages but I'd really like to see a well done one on a KJ.

.25 wall 1.5 is about 3 lbs a foot...... yikes! Might be nice in spots that will get hit during normal use but using it for the whole cage would be too heavy. I think the best way to do an exo is to tie it into an internal cage. Talk about heavy!

Another reason why I think I would just want a rear hoop like in the pic Troy posted. My KJ is getting too heavy too quick.

1.5"-2" 0.120 walled DOM is what NHRA and NASCAR requires.DOM is pretty strong compared to cold rolled tubing and just a tad weaker then chromoly tubing.

In my opinion they are dangerous. Maybe not if you wore a harness to keep you away from them.

If I were to do anything, it would be put a hoop right behind the backseat with angled tubes terminating back by the tailgate. Maybe have the hoop come forward a bit somehow.

weight problems? Aluminum all the way.

But my general view is that interior and exo cages for the KJ are more trouble than they are worth.

I agree 100%.... I see several people killed by roll cages every year at work. If you don't go ALL the way with them they are very dangerous. (all the way being PERFECT design and install, proper harness bar alignment, proper harnesses, helmets, and proper cage padding)
