OK, so the last week of the year we filled up completely. Then I tried to fill up on 1-7-06 and every time I squeezed the nozzle I'd get about 50 cents in and it would click off. I got about $5 in and gave up. I tried a different station/different brand on 1-9-06 and had the same problem. On 1-13-06 Scott went to the last station we got a full tank from and had the same problem and very patiently put $37 in. Squeeze-click-squeeze-click--you get the idea.

So I took it to a Jeep dealership today to get that fixed and have the adaptive memory reset (it flakes out over time). I told them I thought it was the vapor recovery valve (or whatever it's called).

I got a call today 8 hours after I dropped it off from the dealer saying they didn't know yet what it was and did I give permission to drop the gas tank or else I could get it tonight and bring it back in the morning.

The preliminary guess from the dealer is the "rollover valve" which is part of the gas tank so I'd need a new tank at $400.

What do you think? Scott's of the mind to let them root around but said he'd be fine with squeeze-click-squeeze-click at the pumps for a while since we're going to FL in 2 weeks for a little vacation and then we can save up for the repair.

All thoughts welcome.[/list]

I had a similar problem with my libby, but I found it was the type of nozzle that gas station used. it is a possibility that the valve has gone bad. just for good measure I would get a second opinion. and if it is a problem and the tank does need to be replaced, look for a tank from a wrecking yard that is known to be clean, and install it yourself.

When you fill up, try pulling the black rubber from the nozzle up. Break the seal.

That happened in my old Fairlane (not like there are any new ones). Turns out the weld that held the neck in place broke and made the angle wierd. If I pulled up on the nozzle while filling it was just fine, but if I let it sit lower it would do the clicking and stopping thing. Might be worth checking.

believe me, we have tried every possible position of nozzle and rubber boot (like the kama sutra for filling your tank) and nothing helps. just time and patience. we've tried several different brands of gas stations.

the dealership tried to repair the valve, or so he said, but couldn't so the next step is a new gas tank to the tune of $600 with labor so i told them i'd bring it back after we go to FL in 2 weeks. i don't need that big bill hanging over my head!

what i need is some sort of metal splint to hold that little flapper open that the "rollover valve" keeps slamming shut. it would be nice if i could remove the valve or metal flapper but i'm sure that wouldn't be a good idea.

If you do remove the little flap, you will definately fail an emisions test. Depending if the smog tech does his job correctly.

well, i just passed the smog test in November.....i've got almost 2 years before i'm due again--just kidding! :o

our TJ has been so good for so long when you get an expensive repair like this you forget how little in 7 years that you have spent on it. the only other thing this expensive was new tires.

Can you PM me some specific vehicle info? I just want to check on something. I'd need the last 9 of the VIN and current mileage.

I'll look into it for you. Some systems vent through the Leak Detection Pump (LDP). A pinched/blocked hose could be the problem though.

If you still need a tank I can get you one for $255 including tax and can either help you do it or install it for you.
