I did my first fill up today on my CRD. I felt kind of funny pulling up to diesel pump and filling it up. I know I'm green at it for I really goofed it up.

First I fill up sooner than later and put in 17.5 gallons, I was expecting a fuel light to come on but never saw it. The gauge was just above the red E mark. Do the CRD have a fuel light that comes on and did I fuel too early?

Second I believe that I should have latex disposible gloves handy to keep the stinky fuel smell off my hands. I had to wash my hands before shaking someone else hand so I not pass the smell along.

Third I filled up at Hess and I seen pumps at other station that says Premium Diesel for little more cost per gallon. What is the differances, the celtane rating is not on either pumps? How do I know I'm getting the best or required fuel.

Forth I tried to round off the dollar 60 cents worth and end up putting a quart of fuel on the ground. Once it started coming out of the fuel neck it kept foaming out on it's own. I did wash it off as well as the rest of the Liberty and hope it don't damage the paint. Sure made a mess on the ground.

This first tank went 300 miles so looks like 17 average on the overhead was right on. I hope with summer fuel and engine break in it does much better.

I always keep a pair of gloves in both vehicles to keep the smell off me, but yes the diesel is nastier.

My fuel warning light and ding-dong happens with about 1 gal in the tank. I know because once it went off just about 1/4 mile before I pulled into fill up. My Magnum gives a 3.5 gal warning. So when in the future the bingo light go off you better not be far from the station.

Also when the pump kicks off, don't try to put another 10 cents in, I repeat don't add more fuel after it auto off's our you will make a mess. Been there, done that twice because I am a slow learner.

I keep gloves in the CRD, The fuel stinks and it doesn't evaporate as easily as unleaded fuel, so the smell stays with you. Wait till you experience the "Do you know that you are putting Diesel in that thing?".

There will be smart stupid's that will stand there laughing and then tell you that you are a DA for filling it with diesel. I will post pictures of how I eliminated this problem later this morning.

Wait till you do a big splash over from a pump not turning off or as happened to me the hose came lose from the nozzle and sprayed diesel fuel all over me from the crotch to toes and I was 150 miles from home in the country with nothing to change into, and at 6'5" 300 lbs with size 16 shoe not any place to stop and buy replacements.

I've never been questioned about the diesel going in, only comments of excitement to see a read diesel Jeep. So far, every fill up except one has been another excited diesel lover that just can't believe the little Jeep has a diesel in it. 8)

Most of the high volume diesel stations have their pump pressure way up (for the guys buying 200 gallons at a time) which make the "foaming fill-up from hell" that much worse. Also if you have WHITE paint, DON'T SPILL, even a drop without cleaning it right away!, I thought it would be ok for 20 mins. until I got home and washed the thing. Nope, yellow stain on the flare. Not even a warning sticker on the fuel service door, Dealer said S.O.L.

We have spilled diesel on the fender and flare and left it for over a week and no problem. We are only using B10 and if you are using B20 or stronger that might be a problem. I have spilled B100 all over the fender without damaging the paint on the VW, I did however wash that off with the stations windshield cleaner and it didn't damage the paint. It sounds like you have spilled B99 or B100 if it left a yellow stain, and B100 is one of the strongest cleaning solvents that can be bought without special permits. It will strip off any wax and even the clear coat if left on and not promptly and properly removed with mild detergent and water.

I've had guys try to stop me from putting diesel in, and I've had the diesel pump turned off on me while filling up too.

But I've also had guys walk over and ask me tons of questions about my ride, look in it, walk around it, etc. So no matter what, these babies are stirring up attention. 8)

As far as diesel spilling... I have noticed on my CRD that if #2 diesel runs down the paint/fender flare it will permanently stain it. ESPECIALLY the fender flare. That plastic doesn't seem to like the petro diesel fuel too well. So now what I do to prevent further stains is I try my best not to spill any diesel down the side of my Jeep. And if I do, I grab a towel from the service island at the station and immediately wipe it off.

I bought a box of 500 food service gloves (the kind you see at the fast food places) at sams, but I bet you can get them other places. I keep the box under the driver's seat and only use one per fill up. They are cheap and work fine.

My fuel light comes on just before the needle hits E in mine. I got another 40 miles after the EVIC says "0 miles to empty," which happens when the needle hits E. Sounds like they're all calibrated a little different.

My only ugly fillup happened when I was at a truckstop that didn't have a lowflow nozzle. Those high pressure, large capacity big truck nozzles don't fit all the way down into the truck. Pull that handle, wait for a sec, and Paawhoooooosh!! It was like my Liberty puked on me. I smelled like diesel for a week or so. The jacket I was wearing that day still smells like it (and I've washed it a dozen times). I call it my "diesel jacket" now). Got big oily stains on my boots too. I think of it as diesel character building. But I will admit that one of my first upgrades was slush mats. Don't really want that on the carpet.

I carry a tub of citrus degreaser waterless hand wash in the Jeep, along with my PS cetane boost and a big roll of shop towels. The shop towels work just as well as rubber gloves and I don't have to worry about whether to wear my cold-weather gloves or rubber gloves when filling up in colder climes.

I've had a LOT of people give me odd stares when I'm pumping diesel, but no one ever shut the pump off on me. That's pretty funny! The most memorable for me was the Jamaican guy in the rest stop in Jersey who looked at me like I was on crack when I asked him where the diesel pump was. He kept asking me, "Dis a deesl?" It was great. Before long, he called everyone else over and started explaining to them that "dis a deesel!" I had an even bigger audience after I put the hood up for them.

What a great truck!

this happened to me when it was still less that a month old and still using 100% petro diesel. Since then I have switched to b50 or sometimes b80 or higher. b100 on the paint does not seem to hurt it though, as you pointed out.

I guess it must depend on the type of paint. Anyway the wife filled at the B2 pump instead of the B20 pump and managed to get diesel all down the side and it was like that a week before I saw it and took pitty on the Jeep and gave it the first wash job since we bought the Jeep. That was over a month ago and it hasn't been washed since, I'll wash it again in May for a holiday trip to MI for a VW diesel GTG. She will not wash a car. She will not even run it through an automated wash, and the the interior is the same way. She drives over everything, curbs, 2x4's and that is also why I put her back in a Jeep.

Thanks for the feedback, I know I will do better next time. Gloves, don't over pump, slush mats very good idea and run it to the E red mark maybe it see the fuel light. I still don't know the differance between premium or regular diesel. I thought it was all number 2 grade.

There are five (5) things listed for premium diesel, and the fuel only has to meet two (2) of them to be able to say it is premium. Some standard we have here in the US!!!

The real kicker is all fuel sold in US has to at least meet two of these standards.

Might want to check http://www.genosgarage.com . They carry a rubber fuel flap deal that fits down over the fill connection, and rolls up to store behind the fuel cap door. When you open the door, it rolls out into a nice long rubber flap that directs any spillage away from the vehicle. I believe it's under the Miscellaneous Items section.

I like the smell of diesel, guess it reminds me of my boat delivery from San Pedro Ca to New Zealand.

Also when the pump kicks off, don't try to put another 10 cents in, I repeat don't add more fuel after it auto off's our you will make a mess. Been there, done that twice because I am a slow learner.

I put 20.1 gallons in the tank once, filling it all the way to the top. This was just after the low fuel light came on.

The CRD's tank actually holds around 22.5 gallons. I can always trickle in another gallon or two, filling the tank all the way after the pump auto off's.

I topped off with 20.4 gallons yesterday. I always fill with the slowest auto fill setting on the handle to minimize the foam factor. This time I wanted to see how much the filler neck would allow for overfilling and it was 1.5 gallons after auto shutoff - the slowest 1.5 gallons of my life.

It's not that the tank is bigger, it's that you topped off the filler neck for additional storage...

That is a good idea, fill with the pump at the lowest rate. Should get more in without the mess.
