Cargo Bed for camping

I finally got some pics to show of my jeep bed/cargo organizer. This is my solution to the sleeping in the KJ problem. The unique aspects about this cargo bed is that it has 2 levels and 78" of sleeping length. The upper level is for sleeping/storage. The bottom is just for storage.

Sleeping Addition. The same could be done for the drivers side. This gives me 78" of length.

I was also going to make a bed out of foam and covering material on the top. There is always more that I could do but I am done working on it for now.

It a solid piece but is currently secured to the side of the jeep via the rear seat hooks. It's not crash tested but I can't budge it with my own strength. :wink:

I'm quite happy with it so far. It was a lot of work to do and it was difficult to make the sleeping extension be supported properly. My first attempt did not work. But now I have it supported on the one end from the ceiling. It was not my original idea to make the seats fold under it. I built it first and then the idea came to me after. I was fortunate it was already at the right height and the cross members were in exactly the right spot. It was like someone was looking out for me. Thanks

Of coure you can't set up a tent in a rest stop on the interstate now can you? :wink:

There isn't a lot of room you're right about that. That is a drawback. But there is enough room to lie down and have a few inches of space between your head and the ceiling. The other thing is there's not much privacy unless you do something to the windows to cover them. I do have tinting but that is not 100%.

i am in the us navy and that is just about the same as living on a ship for six months. you store everything under your bed have a 4 inch mattress and everytime you roll over you hit your head on something. works great for me.

I slept in a space like that for 2 years in college. Had about 18" of space between matress and 20" center concrete beams. Nice thing was you could sit up between the beams. My girlfriend and I managed between the beams as well. Where there is a will, there's a way!

Was better than trying to "manage" in my '85 z28 when we were in high school. I was thankful!

Now as far as the privacy thing, that is a bit iffy. The storage is prime though.

The one thing I'm not digging is the section in between the front seats. I'm betting my shoulder / back would be into that. You're more than likely a narrower person than I am though.

Looks good! When we camp we just blow an air mattress up in the back and pull the front seats forward.

I go in from the drivers seat. I went camping last weekend and it worked well.
