Is it bad to eat the soft shelled ones?

I wouldn't.
BTW, anyone who's ever raised chickens and eaten eggs will most likely like to have their eggs hard fried. Cracking open one egg and having a half formed chick drop into the pan is enough to make sure that the rest are completely dead before you eat them.

no roosters no problem!

Been awhile without chicken updates, one brown one just got done going through a molt, and the other brown one is still going through a molt.

Got a shit-ton of eggs here, hard to keep up with the supply, demand is much lower, I keep trying to pawn them off on people, but theres always more eggs coming(got 4 today, ate zero).

Just got back from the farm.
I have a movie of this banty chicken showing her six chicks the ropes. If I ever figure out how to get it uploaded, I'll post it.

In this picture, they are perched on a gate that is 4 feet high. Yes, those 2 inch chicks managed to get up to the top rail on a gate somehow and spend the night under momma hen. They also managed to get through a hole above the door to the other part of the barn on another day.

interesting timing on bringing this thread back up. Yesterday one of my chickens died. In the morning she was hanging out in the window well just sitting down, which is unusual because they usually hop out when I come along. I came home in the afternoon and the chicken was dead.

So, I dunno, but I am down to 4 chickens now.

Never know about chickens, back when we raised them would not have any die for months then maybe two or three would go, throw them in the bag , back over the hill to the dump and let the wild animals eat for a day!

But staying on the subject of chickens

I liked the way you bought them in Tanzania ( I suppose most of Africa) go pick out the ones you wanted, haggle over the price, they take them back, butcher them while you watch, cut them up on a work bench that is way dirter than mine in the garage, throw them in a plastic bag and you head home. Best chicken I have ever ate

Got up another 8' of fence today, still have about 24' more feet to go before the back fence is all new. Put up a chain link gate and then used some more chicken fence to section off the backyard. Now the parts storage area is also the chicken area. Moved the coop over and then let them out.

Since its also the parts storage area there is lots of weeds and grasses for them to eat. I let 'em out and they went right after the grass and weeds. hopefully they should keep the weed/grass beaten down to reasonible levels for me.
