CAT Gutt and Emision inspection

Will the CRD with a gutted catalytic pass emission test/inspection?

We are moving to an area where inspections are done every 2 years.

Depends on if the emission test is an OBD II scan test or if they actually measure gases coming from the tailpipe. I think if it is an OBD II test, as long as you don't have a Check ENgine Light on you should be OK.

Also, the emissions standard for diesels may be different. In my parish (county) an emissions test is required, but they didn't do one on my CRD. The tech just opened the hood, stared at the engine for a few minutes, then slapped the sticker on and sent me on my way.

When I lived in Tennessee, I passed the Federal testing both with and without the cat. The sniffer could tell no difference. In fact, the idiot tech made me wait for 20 minutes, the last time I went through, while he reset the machine, because he thought that the readings were too low. Finally I got his supervisor to pass me along explaining to him that biodiesel makes naturally low amounts of soot. I have the printouts somewhere, I'll see if I can find them.

Most soot is on the ground in 60 seconds, but they added the Cat to catch and burn it up. I have no plans to gut mine, but I may run a exhaust system back pressure test with the muffler removed and all coming out the cat to see if it causes any restriction.
I will need to get the Heavy Duty Honey Do under control before I get time to do the transplant to my Magnaflow.

I know in my area the test for a diesel differs from a petrol vehicle. For a diesel they only measure the opacity of the exhaust gases while the petrol vehicles are tested more stringently for pollutants. As pointed out above, someone running biodiesel was registering so low on what sounds like an opacity test that the testers thought their equipment was faulty. Most newer vehicles only get the OBDII test here and all they check for are codes.

Running some biodiesel for the test should not hurt, but keep a fuel filter handy if you have been running dino D2.

Your mileage may vary based on what bass ackwards methods your local government officials choose to employ.

Moving to Milwaukee WI.

I'm already working there, wife to follow when the house sells, so I might be alone for a while.

One of the guys I work with said the same thing that linewarbr said.

Most of the inspecting stations are lost when it comes to testing a diesel. They look at scratch there head and check for CEL's if they have a connection for it, otherwise just slap a sticker on it and out you go. He said that he has had his Dodge Desiel for 10 years and has never actuall had them test or check anthing for his inspections.

They ran the gasser emission test on mine and it passed
(the tech didn't realize it was a diesel????)

Does anyone know what they test for in Virginia? I may be moving to the middle of nowhere in Va for a job. Ive heard that they have testing there, and the only cats I have enjoy tuna, not soot.

They plug into the OBDII port now. Previously diesels didn't get tested for emissions.

So it is just a code scan? Well, I can deal with that easily. Either clear them myself, or if I get the GDE, I shouldn't have any. Thanks.

If its an OBDII equipped vehicle they just plug into the port and check for MILs. If its old skool, like my SVO, they sniff it. When I had my Contour SVT I built, I got rid of the pre-cats and installed 'MIL Eliminators' (basically fools the upstream O2s to thinking everything is fine), and it passed emissions because they just plugged into the OBDII port and everything checked out.

I believe it depends on the county as well even if they do emissions. Safety Inspections are statewide though. http://www.dmv.state.va.us/webdoc/citiz ... ssions.asp

They want to keep CO2 out of the Atmosphere, but they want us to burn up the soot that falls on the ground in 30 seconds.

Sounds like double speak to me.
