The title says it all. Anybody know what the OE brake pads are made of? Organic, semi-metallic, or ceramic? Ceramic pads seem to be the latest thing, but I wonder how hard they are on the rotors? I don't really see an advantage in long lived pads if it comes at the expense of the rotors.

05 Limited CRD. Bought it new. 112k on the clock now.

GDE Eco-tune, rear differential drain plug (drilled and tapped the pumpkin), transmission pan drain plug, Fumoto oil valve, fuel filler neck restriction removed, front hitch, Hayden fan clutch, Sears P1 battery since 08, Mobil 1 5w40, 5 volt glow plugs, DIY timing belt at 109k

Run organics, turn rotors and keep replacing pads. Run Semi Metallic and if you are lucky, you might be able to wear out two sets of pads per rotor life.

Jury is out on ceramics.

Rule I use, if you can find an intelligent enough machine shop to re-machine your rotors, have them turned. If the parts order taker is Mechanically Challenged and can't sell you a tail light bulb with out knowing if your CRD is a Sport or Limited, buy new rotors.

I have found organic rear pads (NAPA) but have been unable to find organic fronts. I turned my front rotors at 45K and used NAPA semi-metallics. I prefer to run organics and change more frequently, maximising rotor life.

I ended up not installing the organic rears because when I took the Jeep to the dealer at 35K to see if they would do anything about a sticking rear caliper under warranty, they replaced everything on both sides (rotors, calipers, sliders, pads) and gave me a free rental car to boot!

CRDs seem to go through the rears faster than the fronts

I don't know what the EBC Green Stuff pads I have are made of...probably semi-metallic or ceramic...but I do appreciate not having as much brake dust as before with the stock equipment.

Kevlar fibers and other stuff (carbon graphite, aramid, depends on who you ask and the series for brake pad )..

Thanks. I hadn't really researched it. I just like the generally lack of dust and wheels that still look silver.

Kevlar is a variety of aramid. Nomex is too...quite similar to Kevlar actually. Aramid...Aromatic Polyamide.
