Not sure if anyone is a member of the finalgear.com forums...but I posted this over there as well.

Anyway, here's a little history behind the "creation":

My buddy and I realized that since our college apartment only came with 1 couch we would need some more furniture for other people to sit on in the living room. We figured...anyone can go out and just buy furniture (In end, with what we paid we could have just gone out and bought furniture...) but nobody has seats from a car in their house. So we set out to scour the "internets" to find some car seats that we could use for the living room, with no real plan as to what we really wanted or where to even look. After messing around with ebay for a few days and realizing it was a waste, I ventured off onto various forums for a number of different car models and manufacturers. After searching I found someone who lived fairly close to us who was selling the seats out of a '96 BMW M3. I contacted him and we decided we would go check them out. We went there with the intention of just getting the back seats, and ended up leaving with the fronts and backs.

Below is what I built for the back seats. Please keep in mind, that I built everything from my head, thanks to pre-sleep brainstorming and boredem at work I had a general idea of what I wanted to do...however some areas may be a bit crude.

I am in the process of painting now.

Please leave your comments and opinions, I'm interested in what everyone thinks.

-Ryan

I've always wanted a big back seat from a car as couch ever since I started watching Top Gear. Good find.

If there was a way to incorporate the rear interior trim panels, etc. it would be really cool. Imagine building the seat Into a wall (not easily doable in an apartment, however) and having a small rear shelf behind the seat and door panels on the sides where you could rest your arms or drink holders.

I've seen really cool furniture made from the trunk sections of cars where the seating was in the trunk.

Like this:

Seen them made out of other cars like 57 Chevy, Mustang, etc. too.

Anyhow, while yours is beefy looking (the substructure) if not slightly crude, it is perfect college dorm or apt. furniture.....besides, you can't have All Ikea stuff right? 8) The front seats would make cool gaming chairs......

Cool!

I'll be interested to see what you do with the fronts... it would be neat to put them on a swivel base, like an office chair! If one or both are power-adjustable just hide a 12V battery in a box underneath :D

I would make the seat belts functional, so when you're friends pass out you could just buckle them in for the night! ;)

The seats are manually adjustable, but they have all of the functions that a power seat does...forward, back, up, down, recline forward and back, tilt up and down...as well as a thigh bolster that slides out. One of them will definitely be stationary. As far as the swivel base, I'm not sure I could do that with a conventional swivel base as the seats are a good 60-70 pounds each. However, I do have a rocking swivel arm chair hanging around that may be sacrificed to use for the other seat. Making the seat belts functional wont be hard if I want to do it later on, I just need to get the buckles for them.

P.S. As an AVID Top Gear fan/viewer, I will admit the seats are Top Gear inspired.
