I called the guy up.
He says hes got a check engine light on. Says it's always for a fuel injector. He didn't really know much about what the problem was and just ignores it I guess. I think he took it somewhere and they cleaned the injectors but still throws the code. At least thats what I remember him telling me.

Since I'm in the market for a CRD I found this a good price for what it has.

He said he was running 31's and didn't have a spare tire and wheel since the vehicle had some large 20 inch rims on it or something and he sold them off to get the black procomps. I figured it was lifted but he wasn't sure. I asked if he had spacers where the springs are and he said there was. So probably like the daystar or something.

I gotta sell mine first before I can buy but if I decide to make the 14 hour round trip to look it over next weekend I need to give it a very thorough examination. I recently test drove a fellow lost members Daystar Lifted CRD and was highly impressed.

I won't buy a vehicle without seeing it in person but I was hoping some of the CRD guys could maybe give me some other ideas about what to look for or ask about.

Any tips on the Check Engine light problem? I would hate to sell my Jeep that runs like new and buy something that will be needing costly repairs.

I would suggest showing up with a scanguage.

Looks good. That's a lot of lift for a CRD.Would look supersweet with a snorkel.

Yea I could borrow a scanguage from my work.

And I definitely agree it would look sweet with a snorkel. Need to get a For Sale sign up on my Mall Rated 2WD so I can buys a CRD 4x4.

If you buy it get rid of those nasty wheels and get some nice Jeep alloys that will look good.

Tell him to fix the CEL.

Mopar parts lists an injector at $862 list $594 their discount. do you know how to change them?
do you know how to troubleshoot if that's not the problem?

knowledgeable maintenance techs have been the limiting factor on CRD's from Day 1 -
don't expect to find one sitting on the corner -

if you buy a CRD with a problem - you need to be prepared to fix the problem yourself.

I am a diesel Newbie. Have never owned/worked on a diesel. If I buy a CRD this will be a total learning experience.

At this point I wouldn't know the first step in troubleshooting...

They don't do Diesel emission tests in Austin, however they still won't pass annual inspection with a CEL on.

I'd be surprised if they ignore it in Waco.

Properly maintained these should be able to run several hundred thousand miles without problem.
but learning how to maintain them can be expensive - especially if you're special ordering parts off the internet.

so before you buy - find a mechanic who understands diesel (and hopefully willing to teach you)

at the minimum a dealership that sells & services Cummins and/or Sprinter vans.

Little update:
I called him again.
It's his wifes DD. So one day she notices the lights on. She tells her husband and he takes it to his mechanic friend. Mechanic reads CEL code and tell hims its the injector, #4 I belive. Mechanic takes it out and cleans it off or something another. Mechanics says nothing is really wrong. Light come back on a few days later and the guy takes it to Autozone, AutoZone tells him its the fuel injector. The vehicle seems to run fine so they just drive around and deal with the light.

Kinda the same info I had in my original description. Just a little more detailed.

Note: this is also a random mechanic, could be a diesel engine shop or just the shade tree guy next door. I asked if it was Jeep that did the work and he said no.

I think for the price It might be worth the risk of just having to replace an injector.

I need to get my 04 really shiny so some of the college girls around here might buy it. It is Mall Rated. :D

I think LOST Jeeps can lead to addictions, I had a dream about Jeeps last night - I'm going crazy

Thanks again for the advice ATXKJ. I would definately like to get rid of this CEL immediatly once I bought it. I have some friends that run a transmission/exhaust/inspection shop just outside of Waco so they can help me out with the inspections if I still am working on this problem.

I will have to do a little research around and talk to some diesel techs, I actually know a few people that work at TSTC, maybe I could talk to some of the Diesel Tech profs.

Where do you go in ATX to get help/service if you need it?

Well - that's a good question
because 05 was the first year - I bought the extended warranty
so I've been going to Jeep dealerships - the one that seems better also sells Cummins/Sprinter
however I'm on a first name basis with the Service Writer and I'm getting the know the Manager better.

They just don't see enough CRD's to be good at solving problems.

on the issues that folks on LOST have seen - it's common for me to have more information that the dealership.
however if LOST doesn't have an answer - you can make multiple trips for them to understand it and work through Star to find it. However I pay a one time deductible, and I have a spare car to drive.

After the warranty expires I'll probably do the work - but I'll keep the spare.

I gotcha. Well my spare is a mountain bike, so if you see me pedaling down I35 on your next trip north. I bought the CRD and it broke...

On a more serious note. What was the factory warranty on the 05's. Is it transferrable? When I bought my 04 the salesman told me I would acquire the 7 year/70k powertrain... I never really looked into and have never needed service. I just took his work for it. (was my first car purchase)

I will also ask the guy selling about the warranty thing. If it was transferrable and still in effect figures he would have just gone to the dealer. So my guess is that it is no longer underwarranty.

7-70 powertrain on an 05 is transferable to the second owner for $150. Don't know about 3rd owner though.

Myself I would NOT buy anything putting out CEL's, if it was taken in to be fixed and still is putting them out, would not give me a warm fuzzy.

Getting ready to put my '06 on the market.

It is not transferable beyond the second owner, and DO NOT TRUST MOPAR to even move it to the second owner. Ask me how I know this.

I'm going to believe that you are being sarcastic about that.

If not... I got FOOKED HARD by Mopar, their master computer decided for some reason that I'm not eligible for the 7.70 anymore and simply deleted it from the VIP database. This is all the dealers have to validate a warranty.

Except for one tiny fly in the ointment - I have multiple printouts of the VIP report, I get one each time I visit a dealer, and they show both my name listed as owner, and the 7/70 ACTIVE with miles and time remaining. Mopar is more interested in finding out how I have copies of those, rather than investigating why my warranty has been removed. They offer no proof that the warranty was removed with a valid reason, just "you aren't entitled to the warranty, the database says you don't have it. (angry voice) Now where did you get those printouts?"

Nice of them. Don't trust them to even tell you the sun will rise tomorrow. They would say the sun will deliver you coffee if it would get them a sale, and you to go away without costing any money in warranty claims.
