Oil change blues ...

* Cliff notes
1) Dealer overfilled oil
2) me GRRR
3) Roadside assistance on the way

SO I got me not time ... <bah dah duh duh>
traveling all the time ... <bah dah duh duh>
need tah get an oil change now ... <bah dah duh duh>
before the CRD goes down ... <bah dah duh duh>

so anyway ... I have been traveling most all of the past month ... I had to get some warranty work done .. check engine light came up wth glow plug error ... so I made arrangements to drop off the CRD after driving trip and before plane trip ... also asked them to change oil as it was past due. It was hard for me to bite the bullet and not do it myself as this is one of life's little pleasures I so enjoy.

So I get back late last night ... get up this morning and drive to the dealer with their loaner car ... stop in by the cashier ( service dept not open on Saturdays) ... pick up slip and walk out ( I had given them my CC number as I was unsure if I was able to pick up .. the joys of work traveling) ... walking out the door I notice they charged me 99$ ... ( Price listed as 73 and they mentioned when I dropped off it was actually 48 something as they have some oil change plan thing now) I was prepared to pay the 73 even ... ouch.

So now I have to get ahold of them on Monday to work out the phone.

Get in the Jeep and wait the 3 secs for glow plug .. then start ... ding ding ding .... service tech forgot to reset the perform service mileage reminder .. sigh .. so I reset that.

Driving home ( prob a 25 mile trip ... ) I see the little annoying plastic tag for next oil change ... .. strange it's only set for 3K more miles ...

Almost home and I am losing confidence by the bucket full ... having flashbacks of the "dealer overfilled oil change" threads ...

Sure enough ... I stop in the driveway ... look closer at the service order ... 8 QUARTS !!! ... get out ... pop the hood .. find a rag ... pull the dipstick ... wipe .. put it back in ... pull it out ... strange I can read anything ??? ... wipe it off ... I cant even see the MAX stamping .. it's overfilled by 2 quarts ... sigh

Call dealer .. nothing they can do now ... have to wait till Monday ... grrr ... so I call roadside assistance ... now I am waiting the 90 minutes it takes someone here with a flatbed to take it to a local service dept so they can fix the overfilled oil situation. I mean I could drain out the excess .. but I paid for an oil change .. I'm not gonna pay to get under there and get all messy when I didn't want to in the first place.
sigh .. anyone have any other dippy dealer stories?

I'll be changing the oil in the future though.

Only 8qts???

They got me for over 9qts (it only holds 5qts) in my 3.7L, on the first oil change!!!

This seems to be a regular problem that the dealers have.

I don't know if their techs are just dumb, or if they are trying to blow-up motors.

I would stand in the service bay and watch them do it right!!! That and force them to physically check all of your seals and do compression test, basically make them do everything to fix it... Diesels arepicky when it comes to oil presure, I am honestly surprised your service engine or oil light did not come on!!! My mom has been driving nothing but VW diesels for about 10-12 years now, and My dad has had to rebuild the motor once because she overfilled it by a quart and drove a week of her normal commute (110miles round trip) she blew her seals.

I do not know how much damage 25 miles would do, but I would make them go through the hoops for you, that and I would ensure corporate knows about it so that if your engine fails after warranty, you can throw it back at them and proove that they caused it!!!! Then you would probably have to bring in an attorney though.

Sorry to hear about your frustration.

sigh ... ok I just got back from the more local dealer where it was getting towed.

Roadside assistance arranged for the towing ... ( they also were correct when they said it would take 1.5 hours for the tow truck to get there.)

Get to the dealer ... drop the Jeep off the flatbed ... go to the service center ... CLOSED !!! I was punked by roadside assistance.

Now I have to wait for the dealer service to open on Monday so I can get the Jeep done right(hopefully).

totally dissappointing day.

I haven't had anything that bad happen, but............I needed to get an oil change a few weeks ago, and Wally-World does synthetic oil-changes in our area for about $35 with tax (Your choice of brand).

1st, I get there at 6:50 in the a.m., since they open at 7. In theory. At 10 after seven, a woman drives up, asking if they've opened yet. I tell her no..........not since the last time I checked the door. I decide to turn the Libby around so I can see better, and they open the door while I'm doing this. So, the woman, who KNOWS I've been waiting 20 minutes, walks up to the door and right up to the counter. Bad etiquette on her part, but hey: "You snooze, you lose" it shouldn't be THAT long, all she'll do is get an oil change, right? Wrong. She proceeds to take up the next 15 minutes, finding out which tires she should get and if she needs 2, or 4. (Meanwhile, the mechanics are twiddling their thumbs).

When I get to the counter, I tell the guy, I wan't Mobil1, 5w30, and I have a half-quart in the Jeep, for when they fill up. Now, it's 7:30. At 8:45, I go to check on the Jeep, since I haven't heard anything in almost an hour-and-a-half, and see the mechanics putting in GOLD colored bottles of oil? I step outside, and check with the mechanic - his response is, "We dont have any Mobil1 5W30, this is Pennzoil synthetic BLEND, and he told us he'd already asked you if it'd be OK". (It wasn't - I have nothing against Pennzoil OR synth blends but I ASKED and PAID for MOBIL full synth).

The 'manager' that was originally there, two hours earlier, has taken off for a break. The manager on the desk made them drain it out, got some Mobil1 10W30 off the shelf, and refill. All under my watchful eye.

Long story short, I got an oil change AND an oil flush. :shock:

And no, they DIDN'T charge me extra. Maybe the 220+lbs. of 'ticked' off Jeep owner kept them from trying..........LOL

Where do I start? Or maybe I shouldn't?!

Short version: Dealer had my Jeep for 5 days to replace lower ball joints and leaky power steering hose. I gained at least 2 more ulcers arguing with them about their incompetence over those days. I get the Jeep back and they NEVER changed the BJ's, but the work order says they did. I call BS and challenge them to prove they did the work. They NEVER did prove they did the work but they did offer "we can put some new ones in there if it will make you feel better"

FFFFFFFFFFFFF YOU!

I ended up telling them that if they couldn't admit guilt or that they made a mistake, then I would rather not have them working on my Jeep any more. I will put new Moogs in my self like I should have to start with.

Always double check the dealers work and get everything they say in writing. Or if you want to make Real Sure the job gets done right, do it yourself. :roll:

Ahhhh.....that was theraputic, i feel so much better now..... :shock:

ok here's my story.....dropped my dad's truck off at the dealership on a thursday morning at 8 and then we hi-tail it into Boulder to get my jeep in for an oil change and to check the BJ's (those are perfectly fine) so i dropped the jeep off at 9 and they said it should only be 2 hours. Nope....found out i had the emissions recall so they then proceed to fix that problem and flash the ECU, well they didnt tell me they couldnt find it the first time so they flash it again and the oil wasnt changed until AFTER the flash......so long story short my jeep wasnt ready until 1PM and there is only so much you can do when you do not have a vehicle and the shuttle guy is out sick......so 9AM to 1PM we cruise around the dealership blegh....they were nice enough to take off labor for the whole deal but what a wasted day... :roll:

wow? overfill issues? My dealer seems to love to underfill me oil...on average about half to one whole quart short. Exactly why I pull out of the service center, out into the visitors parking lot, and check my oil before I leave. If it's short, right back in the service center I go.....had to do that twice now. Only got a few free oil change coupons left...and i'll start changing it myself aftert that, and probably switch to Mobil 1 Synthetic......might even start on the next oil change and say to heck with the coupons.

Odd.......both times I've changed the oil in my CRD, with a hot engine and long drain times, it's taken 7 quarts to get the oil level to the "MAX" line on my dipstick. With the 0W40 and 5W40 oils, it does take a while for the oil to drain back into the pan for accurate readings, so maybe that's where your dealer is in error.

Is there really a big difference in oil brands? The local Goodyear has an oil change club that is just $10/change for the life of your car (after a small start up fee). I did this on my last car (over 160k miles) and it was great. I have looked into doing it myself on my liberty and using a better brand oil but it is hard to beat $10/change if there is not a hugh difference in oil brands.

There is if you own a CRD and it requires full synthetic oil w/specs that meet or exceed DC's for use in diesel engines.
I'd be very reluctant to join an "oil change club" that only charged $10 per oil change.

The name brand oils on the market today all meet the same basic industry standards. If you don't plan on keeping your KJ forever, or don't care about the little extra peace of mind, then it doesn't matter which brand you use. I plan on keeping my KJ forever and want that extra peace of mind so I am using Mobil 1 synthetic. However, I use cheap ol dino oil on my XJ as I am sure that is what it has had it's whole life and it is at 176k now and running strong. (I change it frequently though too) On any vehicle that I don't plan to keep forever I would just use whatever name brand oil is on sale.
However I usually gravitate to Valvoline or Castrol.

Did the dealer oil change thing like 1 time (first oil change). Had a cupon so got it for under 20. After that, I go to my local Sears. 20.00 for castrol oil, they top off everything and takes them about 30mins to do the job and I get a tire rotation cupon every 6 months or so. I've not had to go "clean up" any "stray" oil underneath so I trust they are doing a good job. I have learned with all the cars I've taken in for oil changes. I do not pull off the lot without poping the hood, checking the oil and for "extras" that may be lerking in the engine area. I've "won" a few wenches that way.. It's like going to the barber. Once you find a GOOD place to go. Stick with it. Not that I dislike my dealer. I just don't trust them. :cry:

Without getting into a brand debate. I think personnel tests say a lot. I've always used Penzoil and Castrol. I've been using a Exxon and Mobil brand in my motorhome (syn blend). It just seems when I ran Castrol in the RV, it didn't break down as fast as the others. Once my case of Exxon is gone, I'm going back to castrol.

so miraculously, the oil level changed overnight ... dealer two said it marked between both lines ... I went to pick it up .. sure enough ... now it marks between both lines.

No trust left now ... I'm going to have to check the level for the next few months every few days to make sure it's not blowing out somewhere now... sigh ... I sure hope dealer 2 pulled some out and just didn't want to tell me.

Lesson learned ... I will be changing my own oil from now on.

got a call from my salesman today ... he was genuinely sorry .. had someone new changing the oil ... (not that there is an excuse) .. said they won't charge me for the oil change and threw in a free oil change (moot point as I'll be doing it myself from now on)

You guys got me all paranoid about my oil.. :shock:

I had mine changed about a week or so ago.. Haven't driven it much, but I went out and checked it.. It was right on the money.. But I think I will check it everytime I go take it in for a change.. I get free oil changes for like the next 7 years...
