I didn't think much of it the first time it happened, but it happened again today and under different circumstances, so I am starting a thread.

About 10 days ago, when I started my Jeep to leave work (after it had been sitting for 11+ hours) it re-did all of it's noises and dummy lights after starting. I always turn it to "On" for about 5 to 10 seconds before turning the key over to start, and it will finish all of that by that time. When I turned the engine over and let go of the key, it acted again as though I had just turned it to "On."

Then today, coming home from lunch, I pulled into the garage, put it in park and set the brake, and turned off the A/C (which I always do before turning it off) and it did it again - after it had already been running. My wife noticed it too, and said she thought it happened when I unbuckled my seatbelt before turning it off.

It would seem to me like a short somewhere in the ignition wires, but neither time affected the operation of the vehicle. Is this a priority issue, or just a "thunk the dash and go" kind of a thing?

linewarbr: You can spend hours testing and reading the KJ SM, but after running a shop for 14 1/2 years, I would push in all the relays and fuses before I did a scan or opened up the manual. Others will give you their war stories and give you places to check, but loose fuses and relays are often the problem.
After I bought my CRD, I had my old Jetta to get rid of and the electrical system was hay wire. I pulled the relays and fuses, sprayed electrical cleaner in the fuse box, put it back together and the only thing I had to fix was a bad circuit board in the speedo cluster to make a warning light behave.

Now that I am in another line of work, I rack up frequent flier miles, Hertz points, and Hotel Points, fixing equipment that has loose or corroded electrical connections.

I concluded the only answer was poltergeist.

And bad electrical grounds.

Points

If it dies, check the points, hell even swap out your points that caused it to die last time.... it will always shake the poltergeist out of the machine for a couple weeks

If you check those you should gap the plugs also.

I'm still waiting for a new radiator for my 67 Beetle. Dang thing is taking forever to come back in stock at the parts house.

That is what I hung on to keep it cool.

An 85 isn't air cooled, it has the 1.9 wasserboxer.

Back on topic...

Reseating all of the relays & fuses is the best idea to start. Make sure you hit all three locations. Underhood, drivers door opening, and drivers footwell. (at least those are the three I can think of...) Then check the battery terminals and main power lines coming out of the PDC (fusebox under the hood). After that hunt around for the big harness connectors (I remember one being under the trim in the drivers footwell) make sure those are secure also.
