VT Nomad-you gotta hit the BWCAW (boundry waters) up here man. Last December I made a solo to celebrate my 18th over christmas break-7 days on skis without seeing a single person! Talk about heaven. Nobody bugging you nobody complaining. Oh man what a rush. I brought in food (that freeze dried just add water junk). Nothing like it. Learn to cross country ski and take a trip like that. I came out of the woods and the first person I saw was a the cashier at the gas station on the way home. Thats what I love about winter camping-NO PEOPLE TO BUG YOU!!!! You really are a part of nature and you leave a smaller footprint then if you were in a group. I would never do it with my girlfriend (she would just complain-summer she is cool about it but not winter). And yes I had my old goosedown :P

I've never really been up there. I used to live in Milewaukee when I was real young and I've drive across southern Minnesota, but other than that no experience. Not this coming summer, but next summer, I should finish up school and I plan on taking a crosscountry camping trip. There's a few places in AZ (Grand Canyon, Vermillion Cliffs, Antelope Canyon, Meteor Crater) and CA (Sequoia, Mt Whitney, Yosimite) I'd like to visit again. I'd also like to go to Crater Lake, OR; Banff, Canada; and Glacier in Montana; Arches and Monumnet Valley, UT. I'd probably hit Yellowstone too.

My girlfriend (technically fiance, but I'm not French so I refuse to use that word) has never been west of Knoxville, or north of Roanoke. So I'd like to show her the country so we can figure out where to settle down after school. Neither one of us like the east's humidity and unpredictable seasons. I'm thinking northern Idaho/western Montana.

As for sleeping outside-I have had lots of training and practice from both the military and (don't laugh) the boy scouts. When you camp as often as I do it is second nature and easier to do drunk then drive. Besides-even if I wasn't properly equipped, I would rather freeze to death then worry about killing other people. I lost a friend to a DUI and know of plenty more around me. If I die it's no big deal. I'll get over it. If I killed somebody it WOULD be a big deal and I WOULDN'T get over it.

Definitely agreed - I wish all people who drunk-drove went back and made the decision you did. But at the same time, there are other options for that sort of thing that are safer, like sleeping indoors wherever you were, or taking a cab or something. Sure taking a chance with your own life is better than taking somebody elses, but why take any chance when you can play it safe?

I don't feel it is my friends' responsibility to look after me. It is mine and only mine. I am the only one that can take responsibility for myself-sober or not.

I suppose, but I would consider drinking to be more dangerous than say, wheeling, for example. And everybody on here agrees that you should never go wheeling alone, you always go with a friend so they can pull you out of a rough spot. I say the same should apply to other potentially dangerous activities like drinking. Not just so they can make sure you get home safe, but so they can prevent you from doing something that you might not do sober (such as the ever popular "No, dude, you don't want to go home with her, seriously, trust me. Wait till you see what she looks like when you're sober")

But anyway, like you said, you were prepared and had the equipment already ready, so it's a moot point. But in general, I think it's a bad idea for people to just assume "oh, if I get drunk, I'll just sleep in my car" when it's zero outside and they aren't at their finest for decision-making.

anyway, back to the discussion on cold-weather camping, already in progress :-P

Glacier is my favorite national park. I think yellowstone is a little overrated but cool none the less. I like Montana and Idaho and Wyoming for that matter...the scenery is amazing...good four wheeling...good hiking...the best alpine skiing in the world...

Well I camped in the back of my Jeep again this weekend and this time I rolled the windows down on the rear doors about an inch or two each side for more ventilation. And I had no trouble with condensation at all. I guess that must be the key...ventilation. Thanks everyone for the tips.
