Fail.

A square is two dimensional. And when unrolled, a straw is not a cube.

A straw is a rolled three dimensional rectangle. The rolling creates a tube, which has a single hole through what would otherwise be a cylinder.

It's not a hole. A hole is an opening, but the straw was originally made from a "three dimensional rectangle", and since you are not altering it, there is no hole or opening. This is somewhat related to how they make them, because you are only manipulating the SHAPE of the plastic, not poking an opening through.

These opinionated arguements are fun.

So if said drinking straw was suddenly a 2 mile buried pipe w/ an opening on each end, is it one or two holes? :D

If you drove to each end you'd want to say it was a separate hole.

I beleive pipes are made differently. Nevertheless, i enjoy straws the same. But the chicken came first, hands down, DONE!

when you roll the three dimensional rectangle to the point that one edge meets the other, a new shape is created that has a path through it - call that path whatever you like... hole works for me.

That's what I was trying to get to. But yeah, it's all a matter of opinion. I call it a hole but it's fun to argue against that.

Well, their (reptiles, amphibians, and fish) eggs came before the chicken.

My theory is that a chicken was born, or evolved, and then it begun laying eggs. Maybe a weird evolutionary type of thing, where it converted from a "mammal" to an egg layer. Way back in the day, the chicken could have been suffering being a mammal. And then BAM! Years later, it's now laying eggs like the reptiles which has been a proven successful method for millions of years.
