Damned, I heard of making a point, but really!!!!

As for the tire carrier supporting the weight of the vehicle, If you tilt her that far, and you rest the whole KJ on the spare, I would be happy with a little tailgate damage vs an endo roll!!!

I do not know how strong it will be, but really with how much our KJ's weigh plus the momentum factor, I do not know if it will not damage the carrier. It will have a bumpstop against the top ridge of the tailgate (strongest part of the gate skin) to help keep the rattle down, but if you hit the spare depending on how hard, I am sure you may put a small dent there. I could be wrong, but I guess it will depend on how and where it is hit.

If the tire is in the low setting and you are hit by a car, I am sure the rim will be toast, but w/ the strength being built into this bumper, I think a 79 F150 would be hurt more than the back of my KJ, if it is in the high wheeling setting, I woulf expect gate damage due to force trying to push the tire up more.

Make sense.

But really guys, from what I have seen and how RL is approaching this, it will be as light and strong as possible!

Today we will do more measurements for the front during the game that doesn't matter (donkeys and Steelers GO Steelers!!!) And then at least I will take a break for the Seattle Game.

As for other updates, that is up to RL, I do not want to steal any of his thunder!!! And just so you all know, I do not claim any credit for this, I am just at the right place at the right time, and am able to see an awesome creative mind at work!

I was mostly wondering about the joint that the swing away carrier will have, if it will be strong enough to support the back half of a KJ or if it might just snap off letting the whole assemble get shoved into the tailgate.

I am mostly wondering this because I really dislike taking off my tire from the back during runs (mostly because I am afraid I might not think of it and it is awkward to just let fly around in the back).

Sorry for reasking my question ManicMechanicJoe, but I feel from your response I did not state what I was asking for clearly, so I am trying again.

So, your asking basically about hitting the spare tire on departure, if the thing is going to fail and tear up the tailgate. The tire carrier has two height adjustment settings, one for on the road, and one for on the trail. The trail setting will have an awesome departure angle. To get an idea where the tire will sit on the highest setting, if you have the common Ruby wheel/MTR setup, measure about 8" up from the bottom of the tire, and that will be the bottom of the highest setting. You would have to come off one heck of a drop to hit that tire, and chances are really good that if the drop is that steep, you will high center on the bumper first. Anything is possible and not everything can be bomb proof, but I am making these to be dang near damage proof. I see your concern and when I make the first prototype, I will take the tire carrier and jack the whole jeep up by it to see what kind of deflection there may be and I will address it if there is any. The hinge won't break, but deflection may be a slight possibility.

Ok, thank you very much for responding to my question.

This looks like a very awesome product that will grealy improve departure angles and the KJ durability off-road.

The dual-setting (high and low) spare-tire carrier idea is awesome. I look forward to seeing this rear bumper in Colorado, Rock Lizard! 8) and hopefully purchasing it...:D

I've seen one or two homemade jobs, but nothing like my design. I have looked into patenting some of my products, but in the offroad parts market, it doesn't take much for someone to change a product a little bit to beat the patent, and patents are going for about $10,000 after the nightmare of paperwork. I'm sure someday someone will copy it, and maybe even improve upon it, but I'll have enough publicity and product on the streets and trails, that most people will know who the copycat is. Sucks, but that's life.

Any stamp or logo markings on your products to show that the product is yours? Like ARB, Kilby, and K&N. A decal would be cool.

How's this for a decal, except without the black around it. Just the lizard and tracks. About that size, so it doesn't scream out, just something simple.
