I'm at 55k miles and, just last week, my belt started squealing like a stuck pig. As soon as I put any load on the engine, the squealing goes away. So I'm shopping for a new belt.

Has anyone else replaced their belt at such an "early" mileage point? Any suggestions as to where to get one?

Fan belt? or Timing

Fan belt -I think the 'recommended' change was 37,500

- I did dealership - there was some discussions and the OEM belts are better than the std aftermarket - but expensive.

also "squealing" could easily be a pulley

Make sure you replace the tensioner also, squealing belts are most commonally cause by being loose.

It's the serpentine belt that needs replacing. Does anyone have a part number on this thing? My dealer is telling me $120 just for the belt.

Wow! Those are some serious price differences!

Does anyone have any report on the actual quality of those brands -vs- OEM?

BTW, I found the OEM part # 5072 437AC

well both gmctd and tjkj2002 have said the OEM was better - and since they try to make a point of disagreeing with each other if at all possible - it was significant to me that they both said the same thing.

I would suspect that the OEM belt is not 3 times better than the Dayco or Gates belt. If it makes you feel any better change it twice as often and you'll still come out ahead

There's a big difference in serpintine belts. Some have Kevlar for reinforcment like the Good Year Gater Back ones

I'm not at all impressed with the gaterback belt on my KJ,been on there for only about 3000miles and will be replaced when it's mobile again with a OEM belt, the gaterback has already stretched almost 6mm.Now there tensioners are way better then the OEM ones just not the belts.

We are have satisfactory results with the Goodyear serpentine belts where I work it.

EDIT: It was late at night when I wrote the above statement.

Almost 70k on my OEM belt. I checked it before I went on my vacation and its fine. However, I have a Dayco at home just waiting to go on.

Belts used on a four cyl inline diesel need to be pretty robust. I'm not saying special sauce must be used but that they have to deal with more crap than the average belt does.

For that reason i would only use the oem belts.

However belt failure is not really that big of a deal, and the price difference is there, but when your alt fails and your compressor fails, well, then you'll know. They cant handle the torsional stresses or the harmonics that would be defeated by the oem belt. MABY some aftermarket stuff can, it's your engine.

I don't trust the guys at any of the auto parts stores. These guys aren't certified mechanics, much less technicians.

I always thought Gates made a good belt. Has their quality gone down hill, or is this a specific issue with our jeeps/serpentine belts. Just curious. My other vehicles don't/haven't had serpentines. I figure I can hijack this thread now that you have installed your belt. I probably need to order a belt to keep in the vehicle as we approach 50K. :?

I'm assuming by OEM, you are meaning from the dealer. Can you get the OEM belt anyware else besides the dealer? I'm guessing Mopar.com will be comparable to dealer prices.

The best price I could find online was $114. My dealer had to special order it...cost was $120, so I just told them to order it. It's possible that, with a little more searching, I could have saved a couple bucks. But I was in a time-crunch this go-around. Cest la vie.

Okay, I replaced the belt, but not the tensioner because, when I was having it done, I couldn't get a tensioner in by the time I had to leave town.

Replacing the belt helped for a little while, but now it's squealing again, so I'm going to replace the tensioner. I look through the parts list and find #5072 440AB as the part number, but I can't find it anywhere. Am I looking at the wrong part number?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
