Anyone running 235/85/R16 's? How are they on the trails, aired down, in mud on rocks, etc.?

i havent been in much mud yet, but on rocks and hard ground they are awesome, plus you dont need spacers

How much lift do you have to fit that tiresize? I want that size, because I think it´s better in snow. General Grabbers AT2...
But I don´t know if they fit. I run 245/75R16 now, and that is close to the fender sometime... 2,5" lift "Hillbillystyle".

i just have a frankenlift and i have no rubbing at all, i dont even have extended bumpstops in the front they are also considerably cheaper than 265's too

I've just realized that size won't fit my wheels. They are too wide.

i have 235-85-16's, and i love them. i mainly got that size because i use them everyday, and we get lots of snow up here in the winter, skinny is awesome in the snow.

this is 18k miles later, and i still love them/that size, about 1/2 tread left

what wheelsize do you have? 235's should be just fine. i have a 16x7 and these are perfect. when i get the moabs, 16x8, i wont be able to use this size, that wheel will be too wide. ill move to a 265-75-16 with the moabs, same outside diameter though, 31.5-32"

I am going to that size next. For the tire I want it is actually cheaper than a 245/75R16.

I have 16x8 Procomps.

Older thread I realize but it does beg the question, since this tire is a larger diameter, would re-gearing be recommended? Even if I do get this size and leave the gears at 3.73 what will be the noticeable differences? I'm trying to weigh all the options in terms of tire size's once I'm lifted and I can't go trimming everything to get tires to fit. :juggle:

Some trimming maybe needed depending on above and the year
yes power and mileage will be affected
Most 235-85s are 10 ply and very heavy as well which also hurts

It will consist of OME springs, 927's and 948's, and Koni shocks, stock in front and durango size in rear. No clevis unless it's needed. Same for rear iso's.

Ah OK. Completely forgot to factor in weight. I'm already prepared to lose some MPG and power with larger tires, however since this is my DD I'd like to keep it manageable.

i rode with a bunch of KJs and the guy with 235 tires had more problems with traction. He cut through the top layer and got stuck in the swampy mud mess underneath, got stuck enough we had to pull him out, while everyone else had no problems. Also had more troubles with slowing up and almost getting stuck in the softer sandy stuff. I wouldnt recommend 235 wide to anybody that actually off roads, other then maybe rocks and gravel.

I agree. For years I wheeled with a guy who had wide tires and I had narrow tires. Both of us were basically running the same height....it's just that he had 12.50 width tires and I had 10.00s. I could never follow him through muddy trails. After getting about 15 years of experience under my belt I learned that for most muddy, rutted, nasty offroad trails, wide tires will destroy narrow tires any day of the week.

The ONLY time I would rather have narrow tires is on road in rain or snow. There is a small fuel economy gain with them on road too. But on dry pavement wider is better, and off road wider is definitely better.

Never had problems with my 235/85 R16 MT/R... Wheeled from coast to coast from the higest altitudes of CO to the deserts of UT to the swamps of FL and they've never let me down. Can't wait to get the new Kevlar versions.

Dudes & dudettes... Seriously? Look at a ruler. Count out 10 millimeters. THAT is all of the width difference in the very popular 245 series and the 235. THAT is what made the difference in traction or sinking through the top layer? 10 cm's? Really? Tread design has a much greater effect on this. If you are talking a 9.5" wide tire vs. a 12.5, you may have something. But 10 millimeters?

I was speaking about the difference between 235 vs 265. Most everybody I rolled with that day had 265/75/16, one with 235/75/16 and one 245/75/16. It was obvious to me which vehicles made it down the trail easier. The other guys still didn't have too many issues really. I'm just stating what I observed in that environment on that day.
