ECU software update history for 2005 and 2006 CRD

There are many CRD owners that are having issues with glow plug failures. Below we list the ECU part number release history along with a general description of what was updated for each release. It would pay dividends for owners to check the part number (need a scan tool) in the ECU to determine what release level they are at. The dealer can update the ECU for about $90, at least the one we go to. If they want to charge more, look for another dealer.

2005MY

56044562CA - initial release with many issues
56044562CB - fixed software bug on glow system
56044562CC - more changes to the glow plug cal
56044562CD - improved start ability
56044562CE - lower power to glow plugs to reduce potential for overheating, lower engine torque output in conjunction with F37 to protect torque converter
56044562CF - change to FCV to reduce potential of failures

For the owners of '05 CRDs we would highly recommend verifying you are running with an ECU part number suffix of CE or CD

2006MY

56044776AD - base release
56044776AE - improved start ability
56044776AF - lower torque output to protect TC
56044776BA - lower power to glow plugs to reduce potential for overheating
56044776BB - change to FCV to reduce potential of failures

Both of my ECUs have a sticker on them, that says the part number of the update, my newest one was at BA, my GDE tuned on is at AF, so I guess I might want to get that one re-flashed, that would mean shipping it back for another tune??

GDE...do your ECU Tunes ensure the latest (best) glow plug update is installed. If not, how hard would it be for you to have the proper flash for the glow plug issue burned in BEFORE your ECO or WOT tune is added? I would think that even a $90.00 surcharge would be worth it for some. (hint. hint, wink, wink)

I hooked up my Innova 3160 scanner, and was unable to pick up the a PN. How good of a scanner do you need to get this info, do you know the revision of the ECU you are going to send me this week?

GDE,

So this suggests that you do not have the capability to do the "upgrades" noted in your post above when you reflash an ECU, correct?

Will having a dealer do this particular reflash to an ECU you have flashed wipe out your work?

Up to this point our development work has focused on improving fuel economy and drive ability. The tunes do not include any changes from what is already in the ECU. We are now starting an investigation into the glow calibration and should have our testing complete by next Wednesday. The goal here is to be able to provide a tune that includes the latest glow cal in all tune versions regardless of the ECU part number and firmware version. If successful there will be no need to have a dealer update an ECU prior to tuning, it will be included. We believe this is in the interest of any CRD owner that is experiencing glow plug issues and at least directionally correct.

On a side note, even with the latest ECU part number and firmware several customers are still facing issues with failing glow plugs. The software does help to lower glow temps, thus reducing the tendency to overheat. However, it is not a cure all for the ceramic glow plugs, which are a weak design to begin with.

Great, I can just send my ECU to you for the GP issue, instead of the drudgery of going to the dealer. I hope you get it worked out for us.

The dealer made a typo when he checked the part number for you. Chrysler typically uses 8 numbers followed by 2 letters for the vast majority of their components. The letters designate change level.

If I get it flashed to 56044562CE or 56044562CF, wil GDE's tune put BACK the detune on torque output? I like all the aspects except for that one...

With all the hysteria going on about GP failure especially in 06 CRDs I unplugged the relays, until more info surfaces. Both of mine live in a garage at night, and the weather is not all that cold yet.

Might help if you would post a pic of the relay location to show others where they reside. I too don't really need the GP funtion here in South Texas...

It is mounted at the very back of the battery box, it is a small black relay that says Bosch on it, you will notice 4 red wires at the top of the connector, if you pull the relay off the battery box, it will have PN# 56044671AC. When you unplug it, expect a CEL immediately. What is worse a CEL or a blown engine. Get the ECU update at Jeep, or wait for GDE to help us out.

What version of Vag do you have, mine is at 310 or something like that, I have the older com port connector.

I'm running the current version (8x?? as I recall). Later versions have a "Generic obdii" mode and it works very well on most cars I've tried it on including our CRD's

Hmmmm, seems I don't have any stickers on the ECU with those number, but, I do have a sticker on the hood showing a TCM flash ending in .......737AJ.

Wonder if I'm looking in the correct location.
