I've had a "Type 43" code appear approximately 50% of the time since my Liberty was new (currently 10,000 miles). The dealer says don't worry about it, that it happens to all of the CRD's. Is this true, and what is this code?

I installed a ProVent filter 5,000 miles ago and have not accumulated a drop of oil (using Rotella). I guess this is a good thing, but I expected different. Anybody else have this experience?

I don't think that's a real, illuminated code. The instrumentation panel is a "Type 43" and I think what you are seeing is a very faint but permanent decal type stamp that is always there.

As far as oil consumption, I have not used any oil since I switched to Rotella at 1,746 miles. Dare I say it out loud - the Rotella might have negated the need for a ProVent.

Exactly right. It's basically a vendor part number. Depending on lighting conditions, it can range from unreadable to bright as day, just depends on how the light hits it.

Don't feel like a stranger, you're not the only one that has asked about the "type 43" warning light. :)

On the Provent with Rotella oil, yes it'll take a while for the filter to catch enough oil vapor and other crud before you see anything coming out the drain at the bottom, especially if you're running biodiesel. Took over 3500 miles, 2600 of that a marathon trip to Texas running 75 mph using #2 dino, before mine was loaded up enough to start seeing oil in the drain tube. Rotella was designed for this type engine, throws off a lot less vapor thru the CCV than the Mobil 1 CF rated oil.

This is perhaps the *only* instance of "they all do that" actually being an applicable, valid dealer excuse. It might be better if they actually told people that it was a decal, but I doubt they ever investigated that.

As for the Provent - there's potentially 2 things going on here. Yes, the 5W oil will help cut down on the blow-by. The other thing is that before, the hose went from the CCV *down* to the turbo inlet. Now it's going slightly up and then back down into the Provent. This rise requires more oil and pressure to surmount so that in itself is lessening the amount of oil in the Provent. After 5k miles I have a film of oil on the rim of the Provent and the filter is dark but so far nothing down the drain tube.

But I still think the Provent is a good idea and cheap insurance compared to an intercooler and intake manifold cleaning.

I thought there was a TYPE 43 error several times, but put my hand in it and it seems it was a reflection of the sun that came from the driver side mirror . But i wait to proven wrong.

Yeah, it's a label on the gauge cluster. In direct sun it's very visible. I find it odd to have such a visible label for the type of gauge cluster - why would we care?

But then again, my TJ gauge cluster had cutouts for both "Part Time" and "Full Time". Although the cluster is/was shared w/ the XJ, I didn't think the XJ had a full-time 4WD option? I know the TJ never did. So why did they include it? Maybe an overseas model had a full-time 4WD mode?

More likely the bean counters saving money by simply using the same dash cluster. Heck, this beast uses the same muffler for the 2.4 and 3.7 gas engines and the diesel. DC has had a big push on to get 60% commonality in parts under the skin on all their model lines.

I got the first oil in my provent after a 500 mile trip towing my tj. I got about 2 inches of oil in the drain tube.

I'm also running shell 5W40

LOL I thought that too the first time I saw the 'Type 43' on the dash, then I realized it was printed on there for whatever reason.

I believe my first post on LOST said something like, "Ummm, there's this obnoxiously bright orange 'Type 43' on my cluster. Is this normal?"

You'll get used to it, but then it'll jump it's little orange head up every once in a while and remind you that it's there. Sometimes the sun manages to hit it, but nothing else on the dashboard and WHHHOOOOM, that's all you can see for a few minutes.
