I am afraid I have a leaking rear main seal on my CRD with 90,000 miles. I am going to do a closer examination to be sure. If so, I would like to hear advice from any that have replaced their own rear mains. How difficult? Any special tools needed? About how long might it take for someone with decent mechanical savvy? Any special tricks or pecularities? I welcome any comments! Thanks

Part number vm.1050 is in the fsm for installing the rear main seal.
I do not know that you actually need it. as with most special tool, you can usually make something work.

Basically you pull the tranny, remove the flywheel (use witness marks) pry the old seal out, press new seal in.

Or you could pull the engine and do it on a stand (lawl)

A good time to put in a new tc.
I've never done this to a crd, but i've replaced quite a few rear mains on various caterpillar cummins and detroit diesels.
Did a cummins m11 rear main just the other day.

I would check your ccv puck and tubing.

i've done it when my tranny was out.... prolly a 10 to 15 hour job on the ground

no special tools... but there is a spacer that goes BEHIND the RMS...i put it on the wrong side...
crushed and could not turn engine over by hand.... took it all back out and ordered a new seal

i don't have the tool... i took a few bolts from the flywheel hub... you'll see if you do it... and started them
in with the rms on it... slowly worked the seal in hittin it around the edges... tighten bolts a bit.... hit... tighten
till it was all the way in... not hard... i had a lift though

for me 2.5 hours for tranny out.... 1 hour for the seal.... 4 to 5 hours tranny back in

hope this helps

Are you regularly using a full synthetic motor oil? Seems semi synthetic and full dyno oils do not fare well with the seals on this Italian motor.

This may be your source to the leaking.

Yes, I am using the Shell Rotella t 5w40 synthetic in the blue bottle. Will my seal be less likely to leak with a different oil?

Just had rear main replaced under warranty @ 62K. It's been leaking for at least 35K. Never used anything but Mobil 1 00-40. I was waiting for the TC issue to be resolved. The dealer substituted a "euro" JK CRD TC I got from Mopar Parts America on reassembly.
