This is going to sound retarded, but I have no idea what a locker does. :oops:

Edit: I guess that's not entirely true. I understand that a locker helps to transfer power to the wheels that actually have traction when slipping, but I don't understand how.

an ARB is selectable. You have open diffs when they are off, in other words one wheel will get most of the power and spin if the other is stopped turning.

When on, it gives the same amount of power to both wheels regardless of what is in the way.

In 2wd, unless you have trashloc or other limited slip in the back, you only have one wheel getting power.

When in 4wd, unless you have trashlock or other limited slip, you only have 2 wheels getting power. usually one right one left on opposite corners of the vehicle.

With a locker, you get true 4wd (if you have locker in front and rear, if not you get 3wd), all four tires get power to pull/push you through things. With limited slip lockers, the lack of traction engages the locker splitting power to the wheel with resistance, with a selectable type, ARB, OX, Detroit Electrac you have a switch or lever to activate the locker.

It works in 2wd too in the rear. I use 2wd and lock the arb in snow instead of putting it into 4wd. I feel it works great to not have power going to the front since I do not want the brakes in front to fight the engine too.

Well without the compressor how are you going to turn on/off the lockers? Yea its a butt load of money but if you were in the market for lockers this would save you a few hundred bucks.

Don't worry, you're definitely not the only one! I did some research awhile back and found this link on howstuffworks.com explaining the differential. Once you see how normal open differentials work, you can pretty easily imagine how a limited-slip or locking differential works. It has some nice videos for both showing the gear motion in straight-line driving and turns.

This is for the 2002-2005 Jeep KJ's come with an option to have an open diff or an LSD called Trac-Loc. It's a clutch type LSD.
