I recently upgraded my TC to the suncoast after going through 4 of the stock tc'. Fortunately the shimmy is virtually gone, however I have been experiencing new odd behaviour. It seems the the tranny fluid likes to drain out of my TC very quickly now. I can park the Jeep for 3 hours and if the ambient air temp is below 65*F I have put the vehicle in neutral when I start and let idle for a minute (and man is it rough and clattery by me feet), if not I risk stalling my vehicle out at the first stop I make. Now this all starts to clear up as the transmission warms up, and is even less of a problem when weather is warm and the vehicle is warm. I also have noticed a nice rattling noise when going <20 mph and my rpm are <1000 however when the vehicle stops the rattle usually goes away. Any thoughts or suggestions as I am going in on Monday to talk to the shop that did my install (BTW I had the whole tranny overhauled just to reduce the possibility of continued complications along with a transgo kit install).

Thanks

Groo2

There was a bad batch of filters that let the transmission fluid drain out of the TQ, this was addressed with TSB 21-007-06.

"The customer may experience an initial delayed shift engagement following an extended off (not running) period of time, generally after being parked overnight. The initial shift engagement may feel like a delay or slip when a transmission gear (reverse or drive) is first selected after engine start.
The customer may not have experienced the delayed shift engagement until after the transmission has been serviced, where the cooler return filter was replaced during the service and/or repair.
The condition is not detrimental to the transmission but may cause concern with the customer."

I know that most if not all the performance trans builders in the truck market remove the inline ball valve that prevents drain back. The little valve greatly inhibits flow thru the cooler. I don't know if Suncoast does this or not on the libby. That said, our libby has done this most of it's life and it has a completely stock trans (not for 37'd). It had the above TSB done early on with some improvement. Both my trucks do it (performance trans.), it's just something you get used to.

FYI - we've also had rattles from

alternator decoupler pulley's
serpentine belt tensioner's
and motor mounts

(although I have no idea how to check a motor mount)

all of which seem to vary according to load - and the in gear / in neutral will have an effect

ATXKJ, thanks for the heads up. I have had the engine mounts checked, they are okay for the time being. My primary concern is my vehicle stalling out at stop during "cold" weather (you can't call Georgia weather cold). I will have to have the stealership for a look into the pulleys if the rattle continues after getting the tranny looked at again (tough the rattle is more from my feet than the engine compartment itself).

Tinman, good info to know about the check valve ball, but I have not heard of anyone with a suncoast having an issue with it stalling out. Just makes me wonder if there is a bad seal in there either way it has been an issues since the install and the shop seems willing to take care of it.

All in all I have had a lot of really bad luck with this vehicle, it is my first Jeep, I will never get rid of it, but I don't think I will buy another Jeep, as long as Chrysler owns them.

Thanks Again

My Jeep does this although it doesn't feel rough and clattery it will try to stall the engine when I stop at intersections - it is stock and F37'd. My assumption was that it was related to the original trans pump not being able to generate enough fluid pressure when cold and at low rpms. I am planning to install the Euro TC and new trans fluid pump next summer. I'm hoping this will cure this problem.

grywlfbg, sorry to hear you are having to put up with tranny issues, you are the first I have heard of having this problem other than some one an ATC converter. My tranny was fine until it was f37d, then all my problems started. I had my Transmission pump and TC replaced in feb 2008, The part number given is 6809879AB, if I recall this is the revised pump is it not? I thought he old pump part number was 5073004AD. Some one correct me if I am wrong. As it stands everything for this suncoast install should have been pretty straight forward. At any rate the Jeep is in the shop again. I sort of wish I had waited for the Euro TC and saved some bucks, but hey it was not available when I needed a replacement and Chrysler refused my warranty based on my lift (granted it was my 4th TC, but that should be a wake up call for them)... grumble wine complain... I hope the Euro TC works things out for you

If you can start moving, that's not a drained converter. If you stall at the first stop, that's low pump pressure at idle. Does it feel line a manual trans that you forgot to push the clutch in? Mine did it too and a new pump fixed that. It's possible that the pump seal was damaged on the new torque converter installation.

Yes, it feels exactly like you're trying to stop a manual w/o pushing the clutch in. I figured it was the pump so thanks for confirming. Once my credit card cools down from buying new tires for my Vette I'll have the Euro TC and new pump installed. Then in 2011 it will be time for the timing belt!

I looked on mopar parts america and mopar online parts and the first part number didn't yield any results. 5073004AD does resolve as: pump transmission $386 MSRP.

I would love to know if this is the newer one.

Ah, you missed a "0" in your post above. From the linked post the part # is: 68009879AB and that does come up valid as "pump pkg transimssion". And cheaper too! $282 MSRP Thanks for digging that up!

Update: A bad filter allowing TC drain was the culprit. Thank goodness for an "easy" fix every so often eh?
