Gear oil.

I see that 75 140 is recommended for the rear if you tow. Well I dont to much more then 4 bikes (pedal not motorized), but I do haul a ton of gear inside and plan on getting a safari rack for more hauling abilities. Im thinking I may want to convert to this higher wieght. What do you guys use? and what is your rigs purpose?

75w140 won't hurt but a good compromise is to run the Severe Gear 75w110 from Amsoil. I run it in all 4 of my Jeeps in both diffs and so do about 75% of my customers.

I use the Severe Gear 75w110 from Amsoil as well. Kicks butt.

I use regular dino 85w-140 gear oil in both of my diffs,It will see heavy rock crawling and at over 6000lbs it's like towing a 2000lbs trailer all the time.

Oh and synthetic oil is a big no-no for the my rear axle,will grenade it fast.

I fall into that 75% - I've only used my rear Hidden Hitch receiver as a recovery point but that's going to change.

JJ - This coming spring I am going to be towing one ATV on a aluminum 2-position trailer, should I stick with 110 or go with 140?

I know the axles and tires are heavy, but how did you manage to add 1500+ pounds to your KJ?

So why do you say synthetic is a big no no for the rear? Or is it cause you have a different rear end?

Strangely, a couple axle MFG's are misinformed about Syn gear lubes. The majority recommend synthetic and one even sells their own brand of syn lube.

Ok cool. Im thinking of putting the 75 140 now because I max payload almost year round, near maxing the tongue weight with the extension I have to use for bikes, and I have ~1in over sized tires. I planning on using the recommended synthetic and friction modifier, was thinking mobile 1 synthetic or amsoil not 100% settled though.

Rear high pinion axles are a different story.Currie used to say synthetic was good till it kept grenading there HP diffs,no problems running dino oil though.Same is true with Hi9's,I do not know about Dynatrac's HP axles.

75W-140 Synthetic front and rear, with friction modifier for the rear IF you have the Trac-Loc.

Check the synthetic gear lube before buying a friction modifier - many of them are safe to use with limited slip clutches without additional additives. I use both Royal Purple and Mobil 1, neither of which require additives. I've figured a safe rule of thumb is you'll be fine with a 90 weight lube for loads up to the weight of four full grown adults, as long as you're not overly abusive on the skinny pedal. For trailering, wheeling, or any other activity that puts more than the typical on-road stress on the axle go with the heavier weight gear lube.

Gear oil.
