Brush guards don't protect you from deer but they do a nice job of increasing the repair bill when you do hit one. The only real protection is the ARB bull bar but I acknowledge that its only for the serious enthusiast. The fact that a skid doesn't fit over an extra deep pan is a much greater drawback than extra warm up time when off road.
I've towed a 6k trailer coast to coast twice without any modifications or enhancements to the drivetrain.
