Not sure why it was smoking. You sure it wasnt the tranny?

Id go ahead and change the oil in the tcase and tranny to see which is burnt. If it was hot enough to be smoking you may be able to smell it in the oil when you drain it.


X2. I drive in 4-full nearly all the time if there's any decent chance of inclement weather. Just went about 800 miles over Thanksgiving at about 65-70 the whole way...granted, I'm not towing Terry's teardrop behind me.

There was tiny specks of metal in the transfer case fluid. Not very many of them. I haven't had the nerve to try it out yet though! :oops:

Okay, I got up the nerve and did it. There was a noise! A banging. Tomorrow I'll take off the skid plate and see if it stops. There has been an on and off noise of the skid plate on the transfer case. Really, I don't think that will be it.

If you're getting banging noises don't try to run it again until you've opened it up.

It may still be salvageable at this point but if you drive it again it probably won't be.
