Besides Power Service 911, what fuel additives will dissolve wax crystals?
I haven’t started my truck in 3 weeks, and we’ve had lows down around -28. I'm a little nervous to start the truck knowing that there could be some gelling. Does warm weather help defrost the wax crystals?

Heat melts the wax. If the temp has warmed up past -28 you will be fine.

That’s good to know……….. The fuel stations here advertise that #2 diesel is treated down to -25, but I’ve also heard that you can’t depend on mere advertising.

What I usually use is either Stanadyne, Amsoil (Additive, Cetane booster, Cold flow Improver) or sometimes LubroMoly.

Power service works well if you add it before the fuel gels. If it is already gelled, PS 911 is the only product which I know of which will de-gel it. The problem with using it however, is that once it is gelled, there is virtually no way to circulate it through the fuel system. Last year I filled up with #2 clear after I thought the worst cold weather was over. I was wrong. I was able to melt the filter canister and the fuel tank with 911, but there was no way to circulate it through the fuel lines or IP until they had warmed them up, at which point there was really no reason for the 911 because regular PS white will keep the fuel from gelling.

Amsoil also makes a product similar to P.S. 911, it’s called “Diesel Recovery Emergency Fuel Treatment“. Anyway, the truck fired up this morning with no problems………. I’m about to install a 2 Micron Fuel Filter and Water Separator, which will make me feel a little more comfortable. Both are spin-on filters, which will make the maintenance pretty quick and easy. The temperature was in the 50’s the last time I filled my truck, so I didn’t anticipate the colder weather. From here on out, I’m going to add the AMSOIL diesel concentrate and cold flow improver as well as the cetane boost.
