Air compressors, tanks, etc.

Ok, a few questions here...

First off, where and how are ya'll mounting compressors under the hood? I know a few people have mounted the compressor I just purchased (MV50/MF1050) near the brake master cylinder on the firewall, but how exactly?

Also, where are people mounting air tanks? I'm looking at a 2.5 gallon (maybe two connected together, depending on price) but I'm not sure where to put it.

Clint: Didn't you make a "spider" hose for inflating/deflating all four tires at once? Any chance I could get some instructions on how you made it?

On my '05 there was a black plastic wire tray running along the firewall where I put my compressor. It really didn't seem to do anything so I removed it and this revealed two bolts sticking out of the fire wall. I found a couple of nuts that fit the bolts. Then I fabbed up the little bracket you see in the pick (had a piece of scrap metal that I cut to length and then drilled a couple holes in).

Thanks for the info, I'll probably end up putting mine there as well.

Now I just need to figure out where to mount an air tank. I'd like to keep it outside of the cabin, between some framerails or something but I'm not sure exactly where.

Can't help ya there, I just air up directly from the compressor.

Jeremey...just an FYI...a 2 1/2 gallon tank fits perfectly under the passenger side seat...I personally wouldn't mount a tank on the outside...any type of road debrie or rocks while off roading could pop a hole in it

I picked up the Viair 2.5 gal tank from 4 Wheel Parts today. It's 24" long so it really doesn't fit well under the seat (unless there's something I'm not seeing.) I'll probably end up mounting it in the cargo area behind the smaller seat section. Anyone know a good way to secure something to the floor back there? I thought about drilling through the floor itself, but aside from not wanting to drill 4 big holes in my floor, I don't think I'd be able to reach the other side to tighten the bolts.

If you do drill through the floor, watch out for the gas tank!

Looks like I won't be able to install the compressor in the same location as Hoss. The plastic wire guide you removed has several harnesses running through it on my KJ.

Anyone have other ideas?

is the tank perfectly round, because if so im sure you can buy some mounting brackets from a hardware store or maybe even a scuba shop, there might be some available that just have legs to sit on, something to keep it from rolling around.

I picked mine up at Pep-Boys for $59 plus tax (and then minus military discount, bringing the price back down to $58.) It's labeled as the MasterFlow MF-1050.

Oh, and for anyone interested, I'm thinking about building a box to house both the tank and the compressor and mounting that in the cargo area (still not sure how I'm going to secure it to the floor.) I figure by keeping the compressor inside it'll last longer, and suck in less dirt. Putting it in a box (with some egg-crate foam in the box) should keep the noise level down and protect it from getting broken.

That's actually what I've been doing...I bought 6 of them, kept one for myself, and the rest I've offered to LOST members at cost + shipping. They're all gone, but if I find any more I'll let you know. (Generally shipping has been between $15 and $20, so the total final cost, including tax and shipping, has been between $40 and $50...so if you can find one at Pep Boys for $60, you may be better off, since you can return it to the store if there's a problem. I don't take returns.

If you got a roof rack, perhaps mounting the tank on a roof rack would work. Safe from off-roading debris (except low branches and rock overhangs)

I just thought of the perfect place to mount a compressor and tank:

Here's what you do:

Attend a LOST West event (like Big Bear) and win a cargo rack from All-J.
Buy a discontinued compressor from Checker for $25.
...um...that's about where my knowledge ends.

Jeremy, do you have a plan for hooking the MV50 up to that 2 1/2 gal tank? I assume that you'll need to work in some sort of regulator, and a pressure switch to turn off the compressor when the tank hits a certain pressure? Or are you assuming that the tank will never fill while you're filling your tires (not enough flow from the MV50), so you can just shut the compressor off when you're done airing up? If you end up mounting the compressor inside the cabin, how will you get enough juice to it? (The wires powering the cig lighters obviously won't work.)

I'll be very interested to see how you end up making this work. And it would be awesome if Clint, or someone else who has built a "fill all four tires at once" contraption could repost the instructions on how to do it.
