Howdy all!

I just picked up a stock '05 with 30,000. D/C national said that the F37 & F23 were done in the past. Otherwise it seems to have sat around on a few auction lots more than it has been owned.

And now the grand adventure starts!

Just a little background in addition to my member introduction is that I am pretty much a DIY'er (or with a little help from my friends :D ) and wrench on my own stuff.

The first issue I came across with the CRD is a clunk at low speeds when I am coming to a stop, or accelerating from a stop. It appears to be coming (by sound) from the right side front wheel area, but can also be felt through the floor boards on the feet. I have not yet had a chance to throw it on the lift and look around, but will have my first chance this weekend.

The list I have (thanks to this forum) to look at (besides everything) are the following:

1. Transmission mounts and various heat shields.

2. Engine mounts.

3. Anything loose.

I did mange to check the bj,s and linkage and that all checked out. I guess the biggest question I have is about driveline slack. I have read many a post where people say that this is a "normal Jeep" thing. Being my first jeep I would have no idea what "normal" quirks they have or if this is just a Jeep thing or not, but somehow I don't think that this is the case.

Anything else your collective knowledge can think of to check or watch out for?

Are there any group or online service manual links that still work?

Any favorite/necessary mod's for fuel economy/safety/ longevity (Planned at the moment is running larger pipe from the cat and the CCV reroute. By the way, what is the "best" solution not from "kit" for this mod now that people have been doing it awhile? I also read the fuel heater warning).

I am sure I will have plenty more questions to ask, but for now it is back to the forums to bring myself up to speed on the newest member of the fleet.

Thanks!

El Jefe

Some basics (see the CRD Tech section and use search for more info):
1) Clean Map sensor/CAC Hoses
2) Straight pipe or flow-thru muffler (2.5" is all that is really necessary; be sure to remove the flange between the cat and the stock muffler)
3) Check ball joints
4) CCV filter (Provent or DIY)
5) GDE Tune (nothing else comes close, IMO)
6) Consider using a better air filter (Amsoil EAa); air box (V6 airbox); and fuel filter (new Mopar or Racor)

PM me if you want need more details on any of the above.

Congrats on your purchase!!!

There are some links to the most necessary mods in this thread: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=49035

Mine used to have the driveline "clunk" as well, particularly if slowing down, say to stop at a red light, then speeding back up as though the light turned green before I came to a complete stop. It was explained to me as "driveline lash" from the driveshaft, and I was assured it was normal.

Strangely, since getting the GDE tune, I have not experienced the clunk anymore.

Lower Ball Joints for clunk, it should also be showing having them done in recall.

Many CRD's had loose motor mounts, no big deal but common

Got her up on the lift last night. The passenger side engine mount was loose and the engine was knocking against the upper IFS arm. Dropped her down and got on it from above with a breaker bar and an 18mm socket with a 24" extension. Tightened the other side while I was at it. no more knock :pepper: !

Someone previously had cross threaded one of the rear bolts on the mud guard and forced it in. Most likely a little sloppy air gun work. the weld nut in the crossmember busted off trying to remove bolt. I cut the bolt head off with a grinder pulled the weld nut out of the crossmember with a magnet and put in a through bolt  !

Besides that everything else is in great shape!

Now to build a provent and cut off the tailpipe!

Thanks for the help!
