I presently run with a Racor 2 microns fuel filter with no problems whatsoever. I see a lot of people are using a in-tank Cummins lift pump from the 99-06 ram 5.9l. It seems this pump with the harness form the 06 kj gasser fit bolt-on on our Crd. I was wondering if it would really be worth it for me because I don't have any real problem so far. Could someone tell me what would be the advantage of installing a lift pump! What improvement am I looking for?

IMO, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.... I'm running the (new) stock filter head with no issues, so I see no real reason to spend the money on a pump.

Like he said. If it ain't broke don't fix it However if it is, like mine was, then the intank pump will cure the air leaks in the vacuum system

Stoutdog:Speaking of "if it ain't broke"...When I purchased my 06, I wanted to install a new fuel filter unit after reading all of the forum posts on vacuum leaks, burned out heating elements on the housing etc. After I found out that the Cat 2 micron unit was no longer available I didn't do anything, literally. I still have the original fuel filter that came on mine from the factory, 45000mi ago...Not something I am bragging about or even proud of, I am just stating a fact.
However I do plan to replace the fuel filter on my next oil change, just so that I do not push my luck too much, and I wondered if you can tell me about the new (stock) filter head you installed. How much more inproved is it? How much did you spend on it?

The new filter head has a bigger plug for the fuel heater. That requires putting a different plug on the wiring harness. With the original head some have had problems with the heater plug melting then causing vacuum leaks. Some believe the problem was caused by air being trapped in the fuel head. I have the intank pump and am on my original head as are others. When people started using the finer CAT filters the air problem became more pronounced. The filter head is not the only source of air leaks

It cost about $80, but that includes an entirely new unit (filter head, fuel heater plug, and fuel filter). If you aren't having any issues ATM, I would recommend waiting until you need to do a fuel filter change... it'll just save you some hassle.

As for the new filter, I literally have about 10 miles on it So far, so good. As many folks on here know by now, my father and I both own CRDs. His fuel heater plug appeared to have burned slightly at the filter head and, after a fuel filter change, he kept getting air in the fuel. I drove his CRD, post-filter head change, for about 500 miles and didn't have any issues.

IMO, it's worth considering just so you don't have to worry about the fuel heater shorting out, which seems to be a very common issue. Now I can leave mine plugged in and not worry about it.
