I drive normal... no towing... so should the od be on or off? light on or off in the instrument cluster? the manual confused me.

Drive with it on. You want to drive with the light in the dash off. The light says 'o/d off' I believe.
When its off the engine will shift at higher rpms.

its a whole nother gear...its used for passing or towing...so if your on the highway, press it so it downshifts and you can accelerate faster...but make sure its on :) so the light dosn't show

For the best gas mileage under normal driving conditions overdrive should be on, but it won't hurt anything (except your fuel budget) being off. The main reasons to turn OD off are towing (more power to wheels), engine braking (saves the brakes) and mountain driving (stops gear hunting, thus reducing trans temp). There is no need to manually turn off OD when passing, cause the trans will automatically down shift when the pedal is floored.

in town mine is off all of the time, never get over 45 anyways better take off etc. Out on the highway I kick it on of course, get down in the hills then its back off since I still the 4.10s in a box and haven't installed them !
