To all those pioneers out there working on SFA conversions that us mere mortals will eventually get a shop to fit on our vehicles.....have you thought about Portal axles? There seem to be two kinds that have been used for conversions of other vehicles in the past...Volvo 303 axles (second hand only..no longer produced) and Unimog axles. As far as I can tell much less stress on drivetrain as final gear reduction in the hub...lots of ground clearance...and very heavy duty. Unimogs I know are pretty indestructable (as used by the 'Hereford Gun and Country Club' aka 'Them' in the Desert!). Please please please think about it..my dream is my KJ on Unimog axles and 37's...with a supercharger on the engine!

A few links to a Landrover 90 portal conversion...impressive I think you'll agree...those are the volvo axles btw

Ha ha! Heavy duty shafts in a Rockwell. That's the axle equivalent of a supercharger on a Hemi.

Oh, hang on...

Anyone know where I can get a heavier-duty transfer case than the Atlas II?

portal axles are some impressive stuff. There's really no other way to get that much clearance per tire size. Without them, no matter what kind of lift you get, you'll still only be able to get an axle clearance of (Tire Size / 2) - (Diff Size). A portal axle can raise the axle up 8" or so just like that!

That being said, if I were going to be doing a portal axle conversion, it wouldn't be to a KJ. I like driving my KJ on the road, and I don't think there's any way to make one of those portal axles road-friendly. I bet that land rover is pretty nice though! (if you're on a safari or something)

One of the first sites you find when you search for unimog you can see a mog climbing straight up a 30" concrete step. Impressive!
