Did a bunch of PM to the CRD today but couldn't figure out how to move the tensioner pulley and get the old belt off! I searched and didn't find anything and there wasn't anything in the shop manual so I figure I must be missing something obvious.

FWIW when I compare the belt routing to the diagram the existing belt is on wrong. Its the original belt but I'm pretty sure the dealer had it off when doing some warrenty work about 40k miles ago. The way the belt is routed I suspect the tensioner is more extended then normal (the belt is 'longer' when routed this way because it goes inside the right pulley, not outside it). I wonder if the slot to adjust the tension is hidden because the tension is in the incorrect position. Or maybe I'm just missing it.

It looks like the tension pulley has to move down to release, but I didn't want to force it. Any help is appreciated.

There is no slot to adjust the tensioner - it's spring loaded - bolts in with a key to keep it in place.
The diagram is correct - if I don't follow it - things aren't tight.
( you do really need a serpentine belt tool - long skinny- trying to get a ratchet in chews up knuckles on the radiator)

Service Manual isn't much help

2.8L DIESEL
NOTE: The belt routing schematics are published
from the latest information available at the time of
publication. If anything differs between these schematics
and the Belt Routing Label, use the schematics
on Belt Routing Label. This label is located
in the engine compartment.
CAUTION: DO NOT LET TENSIONER ARM SNAP
BACK TO THE FREEARM POSITION, SEVERE DAMAGE
MAY OCCUR TO THE TENSIONER.
Belt tension is not adjustable. Belt adjustment is
maintained by an automatic (spring loaded) belt tensioner.
(1) Disconnect negative battery cable.
(2) Rotate belt tensioner until it contacts its stop.
Remove belt, then slowly rotate the tensioner into
the freearm position.

thanks - I'm not sure if I was madder at the 5-star for putting the belt on wrong, or myself for not noticing it...

I checked out the belt tool online and will get one this week. I assume I put it on the head that's in the middle of the pulley and rotate clockwise/down? Or does it grab from the back of the pulley?

Thanks again for your help.

On my CRD, I just put a spanner or socket on the bolt in the middle of the tention pulley ...then I push it in a clockwise direction ... about half of a 1/4 turn (1/8 turn)...then the belt just slips right off ...no mess no fuzz ...no special tools ..

Sonix has it right. A 15mm socket on the tensioner pulley with the belt wrapped around it is where you want to attack. Turning is clockwise will loosen the belt enough to slip it off...it takes a lot of force to move the tensioner. Good Luck!
