Greetings from Dan in Wheeling WV, I have put 47,000 miles on my 05 CRD which I bought two years ago with 30,000 on it. It has given me no trouble, and it pulls my 14' tandem trailer with my restored army jeep around to military vehicle shows very well. I like this jeep so much that I would like to buy a second CRD. That was until I found this site. Am I driving a ticking time bomb?

Dan - I don't believe so, although some seem to have more trouble than 'normal' with the CRD. I use my Tow Piglet to pull my 18' trailer with my SVO to HPDEs and have 75k on it and wouldn't hesitate to go anywhere in it. Last fall I towed with up to Elkhart Lake and got 19-20 MPG. :JEEPIN:

I haven't heard of any CRDs that actually exploded. A few burned up from leaking fuel filters, but if you fix the leak, they are fine.

Mine has been nearly perfect for 92k miles without bypassing anything. The only thing I had to fix that was unique to the CRD is some turbo hoses.

You're not driving a ticking time bomb. Keep in mind that most people wouldn't look for this site unless they were experiencing an unresolved issue, so maybe about ~60% of the posts here have to do with a problem a member is experiencing.

That being said, with a CRD KJ (Liberty) preventive maintenance takes on a whole new aspect when you take into account the numerous "fixes" here that have to do with an engineered (or bean-counter) failure. Take it as a good sign that you have been running stock for 77,000 miles with no issues. Most of the "common" issues with these would have shown up by now.

Now, if you want to make it run even better than it is now. . . you are in the right place, my friend.

I dont think so.... I bought mine knowing the few CRD related issues and have started doing some things to prrvent them from becoming problems. I use mine as a daily driver and only vehicle, even went wheeling this weekend with it.

Do the ORM untill you can either do the SEGR mod or GDE tune to avoid EGR problems.

then to keep oil out of the intake and CAC hoses add a provent or just EHM

You don't have a ticking time bomb.... but a little preventative maintenance doesn't hurt (new CAC hoses, GDE tune, new fuel filter head)

Personally, my family has owned three CRDs with nary an issue - except when my dad's Jeep got owned by a dump truck

Just get the GDE tune or do the ORM and you will be fine. I have not done a thing beyond the tune, and I will not do any of the CRD mods, until my Jeep proves to me that I need them. So far, they both run beautiful.

I have 76,000 miles with only trying the ORM for the last few months. Only one turbo hose and some battery problems early on were all I have had to deal with. I had the recalls done, and I still drive all over the country. In fact it has cost me less than my 2004 envoy XL, but I bought her used with 66,000 and it needed some over due maintanance.

I am in the same boat you are. '06 Limited. Bought it with 23,000. It now has 38,000. No problems whatsoever, except for a faulty TPM transmitter (darn the NHTSA).
Love it, by the way, especially since here in California, no one has ever seen one before.
The Valet guys have a field day with it.
I read these posts for the preventive aspects, not the "sky is falling" part.
Enjoy.

There's an old thread in this forum. It documents one persons attempt to get Chrysler to recall the filter head. There were some photos of badly burned CRDs too. Maybe Sir Sam can link it.

I agree, a GDE tune, and maintenance is all you need. The ORM at the very least.

Not a ticking timebomb but economy, reliability, performance, and longevity ( to coin another website!).
Throw in the 545RFE and you got 1 heck of a unique machine. This uniqueness does require attention as you would to any fine performance or sport or special use auto because that's what we really have. You take care of it and it will repay back bigtime!
Bought mine 8/07 with 17K and now 90K miles and nooo regrets whatsoever. Feel good about the CRD because I certainly do.

Life is sexually transmitted and ultimately fatal. Everything fails at one point or another.

However, if the rest of the KJ keeps up with the engine, on average these trucks should provide a long life. Radical off-roading and heavy trailer towing are expected to shorten this life, but there's no way of knowing how much.

My stated plan is to drive it till the doors fall off, then get some duct tape. When I get tired of climbing through the windows, I expect some day my engine and transmission will end up in an old Wrangler.
