The Nov 2009 DieselPower Magazine compared 2 stroke oil, Opti-Lube XPD and FPPF8+ fuel additives. I have used Power Service and really didn't notice any improvements in fuel economy. Anybody see any real world improvements using any additives.

I have used 2 stroke since day one. no mpg increase, no power increase, runs quieter and easier to start.

I consider Biodiesel my additive (20%) and it yields quieter running/smoother, lower emissions, and about the same economy at that blend. Only once have I used a synthetic (PowerSevice) and it was as an anti-gel for a bad situation, not a regular additive.

I religiously add SOMETHING for lubricity to ULSD. The common rail pumps are designed for diesel meeting the EN specs in Europe, not US ASTM, which is not as lubricating. There is good data out there showing pump wear greatly worse with fuel not meeting at least 460u lubricity. Biodiesel is the best additive bar-none, but some additives are effective as well, like 2 stroke oil and Stanadyne/PS/Optilube products.

After 76,000 miles, I just began adding powerservice. I'm on my second bottle. I have never had a problem with my fuel system or engine... perhaps fate will change that once I hit "post"

If ya do a little research on PS (eg. main ingredients), you may think twice about crackin' your wallet and shellin' out your hard earned cash for it.

I use Opti-Lube XPD, and have noticed a modest mpg gain with it.

It says magic unicorns and frog spit go into every bottle... does that help?

No I'm kidding, I bought it last month because I heard guys on here talking about it. I will have to look into it more.

Thanks for the heads-up

Do tell... I use PS on occasion, and I know folks who have been using it in every tank for years. What's wrong with it?

Let's stick to the topic which asks about 2 cycle oil added to fuel.

So what was the article saying about the comparisons? Which one was better to them?

I wasn't trying to go off topic, He said he used "power service" and he was asking what the real world advantages of the products were in comparison to the other three mentioned. Perhaps if I knew what the contents of P.S. were, I could better understand the advantages/worthlessness of the product. I'm pretty sure that's the heart of the thread.

Yes, this is still on topic. From PS's MSDS:

INGREDIENTS
Petroleum Distillates
Aromatic Hydrocarbons

Not sure what's bad in there... :?

I use PS too on ocasion. I have seen talk of 2 cycle on here I woul like to know more about the differences between the two.

I do like bio blending at 20% I would still be doing that but since the 1st of the year the wonderful state of PA has cut off the $1 a gallon subsuidy that they had on bio. it was like around 30 cents a gallon cheaper than petro D now its close to $1 more expensive. I believe in bio fuels as a fuel of the future but I have a budget too, I don't want to send more on fuel than needed and don't see how most people would either.

I use diesel fuel to lubricate my fuel system and anti gel in the winter to keep it flowing. Powerservice? I think, comes in a white bottle, I buy it by the case at Fleetpride.

The problem is ASTM D2 is specified to a lubricity of 520u, less lubricious than what the injection system is designed to, so you may get premature wear in the fuel system. And since the process of removing sulfur from diesel also removes some if its intrinsic lubricants, refiners must add them back to meet spec and that costs them money. PS has tested US pump fuels that don't even meet ASTM.

Now the question that still remains is:

Is 2 cycle oil damaging to the Liberty CRD fuel system if it is mixed with the fuel in the tank?

Use a Synthetic TC-W3, like Quicksilver marine 2-stroke oil, and the answer is no. However, you should not use 2-stroke oil in an engine designed for ULSD, model year 2007 and later.
