Torque conveter replacement at a shop.

How much does getting the torque converter replaced at a transmission shop? I don't have a transmission stand, and I don't have some people to help me. Just curious as if it is worth it or not. I know the new converter costs around 230 or so. From the GDE website, it looks like 6 hours or so? Figuring 50 bucks an hour shop time, that is about 530 total?

I am thinking about doing the GDE tune for the fuel mileage improvements, but the cost/benefit ratio goes out the window if I have to do the converter or pay someone to do it.

Just thinking out loud.

You really dont need a new TC for the eco tune. It sound like you are looking for economy, not a hot tune? The eco tune actually helps alot with shudder. And start thinking in the 4 digits for that job, shops have lots of overhead to pay. They would not break even at that figure.

At that price, don't count on them speaking English or having any tools of their own.

If you are still under warranty and have a rear main seal leak (almost all CRDs do because of the poor breather system) you can get your TC replaced by the dealer (as we did) when they do the RMS repair. (We supplied the TC from MPA [$230]). If you have neither the 7/70 or 7/100, check the online source for MOPAR extended warranties. Unlike dealers, they can sell them long after the factory 3/36 has expired. The warranty cost will cover most of the R&R of the trans. We have an '05 with 65K and have already gotten double in repairs what we paid for the 7/100 ESP. At the rate we are going, I won't be surprised if we recover 4-5X the cost of the ESP.

I don't have access to a trany jack. Dang, that sounded dirty. I should probably stick with the eco tune anyways, the whole point is for better MPG. There is never enough power anyways.

In November I had my original TC and Pump replaced with the new Jeep version at a local Transmission shop (not AAmco) cost me $600.00 total cash.

Shop around for a reputable established transmission shop and compare costs.

How, specifically, does one know which TC is the "Euro" version, and which is the OEM version our '05s came with?

For those who have done this job yourself...what else should you replace while you are at it? Is the TC the ONLY thing you purchase...or are there more parts you need?

Yes, there is another very important part ..... the transmission pump.

There are two filters that should be replaced when completing a TC swap. It requires dropping the pan, then they are easy access. Chrysler sometimes replaced the pump per warranty, but this is more of a safety measure. We did not change the pump on our two vehicles when completing the TC swaps. If the pump is not making strange noises and the filters are not plugged or damaged, the pump is most likely in good shape. Our decision was to save the funds for other future upgrades.

Mopar Parts America (www.moparpartsamerica.com) is where I purchased my parts from, they had the best pricing.

You will need to know the part numbers of the parts you need.

The counter person at the local jeep parts department helped me locate the part numbers using my Vehicle Identification number.

No tax and combined shipping helps reduce the costs even more.

I believe that the problem with the trans was determined to be a combination of both the TC and Pump.

I am not clear on why that was but maybe someone other than me who is familiar with the TC problem can elaborate more on the subject.

I can only tell you this, that after having the muffler replaced with a 2 1/2" one, the TC and pump replaced with the new Euro style, loud noises, shakes and rattles have gone away, the engine runs smooth, power is has increased, mileage has increased by 2.2 MPG and the vehicle has become a dream to drive.

I am finally loving this power house of a machine.

TC, pump and filters cost me $610 + installation $600 and the mechaninc installed new brake pads at no additional charge.

I am seriously thinking about buying another, for I have never experienced an engine and machine like this one before.
