Post subject: Anybody seafoam the CRD?
PostPosted: Mon Dec 28, 2009 11:31 pm
With all the talk about oil/soot clogging up the intercooler, intake, etc....I was wondering if anyone has successfully used Seafoam to clean the engine easily? Will it help get the gunk out?

SeaFoam Is great stuff but I have not heard anyone here talk about using it in our Diesels. there was alot of people me included when I had my outback and posted on Subaruoutback.org that did a cleaning with it on the outbacks gas engine. we put 1/3 in the gas tank, 1/3 slowly into the intake through hose we pulled off with the engine running and the other 1/3 in the crankcase just before an oil change, then you only ran the car enough to mix it in to the oil good. I did clean the valves and intakes. mine smoked like mad when I did it in to the intake but after it was all done it purred.

I have looked at the can and it says it can be used with diesel but since this is my first diesel I am not willing to try what others have not successfully.

I've put a can of it directly through the fuel line, IP and injectors every 20k miles or so. Some say that it is pointless to use it and may even be detrimental to the engine since it is nothing more than Isopropyl alcohol and pale oil. However I have used it with excellent results in older IDI engines with dirty injectors. The nailing completely disappeared after half a can is ran through. The VM engine is another animal though. As far as I know, no one has ever had a problem with dirty or sticking injectors with this engine, so there may not be any actual benefit to using it.

As far as cleaning out the intercooler with it, that sounds lake a recipe for disaster. The only way to introduce it into the intake is pre turbo. I will try a lot of things but causing the engine to run away and explode by dumping a can of Seafoam into the turbo charger isn't one of them. If it is lightly sprayed into the intake hose, it will probably not really get enough contact and dwell time with the crud to be effective.

If the EGR is disabled there is no crud buildup anyway. Sure there is oil coating everything, but it doesn't buildup as a layer of crud without the soot from the EGR.

I've ran it through the tank, with the fuel, but have never put it into the crankcase or the intake. Putting it in ahead of the turbo doesn't sound good, so I wouldn't advise it. :D :D

gmctd wasn't fond of it - main objection seemed to be the Alcohol would carry water into the injectors

Regardless of gmctd's opinion on injection dynamics, it is actually better for any water to pass through the injectors in chemical suspension rather than as free water. Power Service, Howes, Stanadyne, Seafoam, etc, all do the same thing to free water. They cause the water to be bound up chemically so that there aren't free droplets to cause erosion or filter freezing. The word on the street is that SlickDiesel, the lubricity additive in Powerservice, is nothing more than biodiesel. So if there is a concern about the lubricity of Seafoam, just dump a little BD in the can before sucking it through the fuel system.

Putting it in the crank case is supposed to clean the lifters and loosen sludge I think. I did it to the Outback but I never drove the car with that in the oil, just warmed the engine up good by idling then drained it and changed the filter too. it is supposed to remove gum, varnish and carbon from the rings. I poured it into the intake if the subaru via a main vacuum hose. this is more for a gas engine and I don't know if it can be done the same for a diesel like ours. B12 Chemtool works nearly the same and is cheaper but not for use with diesel engines.

Here is a video of how what I was talking about is done.

If you have that much crap in your engine your using the wrong oil. Still a bad idea.

Ive used it in the fuel tank, never in the crank case. I use Lubegard every oil change. :JEEPIN:

I dumped a can in the fuel tank and ran it with no issues. If you're using a quality oil and change at regular intervals I don't know why you would mess with any additive in the crankcase.

In the past, I have used Seafoam on diesel boat motors for years which is all the CRD is. It has it's origins in a marine environment remember?

At school (diesel tech) we ran all of our engines on bio diesel, 3406b's (multiple 4ck & 5kj) did not like it, after sitting for the break we came back and had all kinds of fuel problems. We called cat and they RECOMMENDED THE USE OF sea foam. AND it worked.

We overhauled one unit and disassembled the injectors, they were full of the same crap. We forced sea foam through the filters and ip while we turned the engines over.

Hooked up regular fuel, they started immediately. Disassemble a injector and fuel rail, they were clean.

Sea foam saved us a ton of work.

Our Detroit (series 60) and Cummins (m11's) did not have any problems with the fuel. So, fuel system design is relevant, but it does and did work.

The problem was apparently common enough that cat knew exactly what the problem was from a short description.

Yea, I've never had ANY trouble with it. Oh, I don't run it every tank full or even every other, but maybe once a year or so, I'll throw some in the fuel tank. I think it is a wonder medicine like aspirin.

Actually, if you look at the link I provided, Seafoam had to change their formula in 2006 to comply with Al and the boys. They are probably tickled pink as in Pinko.

Yeah I see that.... they were using one of two kinds of base oils depending on price and avalibility now they can only use on of them. This is due to sulfur content and began in October 2006. The cost of the product has also gone up in recent years.
