I ordered a bunch of stuff from jparts.com recently, including my mopar skid plates. They came with these little nutserts to install them. I have never used these before, but the instructions make absolutely no sense. Here's a link to the install guide:

http://site.justforjeeps.com/guide/82210003.pdf

This install guide shows the hardware that I have. Piece "A" is pictured in this install guide with just a bolt and a threadless nut. The kit came with a tool that has a bolt, a threadless nut, and then a round, serated, peg looking thing threaded on to it. The "peg" is brass colored, and as you can see the "peg" is not pictured in the install guide.

So ---

Do I trash the peg? Does it serve a purpose? I think it is another form of nutsert, but it serves me no purpose if I only have one of them.

Secondly, the nutserts that are pictured in the install guide make no mechanical sense to me. I can put them in the hole in my crossmember, but they just slide right back out. So what is the point? I could take the tool and try to torque it down, but all I will be doing is torquing the nutsert on to the bolt, which will still just slide out anyway.

 What am I doing wrong here? This makes absolutely no sense to me. Anyone?

Ditch the brass. Hold the nutzert in the hole and slid the threadless nut on the bolt. Insert into the nutzert and torque it down. This will spread the nutzert and hold it in place.

drill a hole through the cross member to hold the skid plate, much more secure. I had so many problems with those stupid nut zerts, did a search on here and found many were just doing as I stated above. :2cents:

thanks for all the input. I was really wondering about those nutserts. It just doesn't seem like it is very secure to depend on just the pressure of those things being torqued in there. But if that's how they work, then thats how they work.

I went ahead and installed them with the nutserts. I bought grade 8 bolts to secure the front skid, which also secures the front half of the tranny skid. So, most all the skids have some actual bolts holding them in. The only one I'm really worried about falling out is the transf case skid. It is secured completely with nutserts. :? I guess we will just have to take mopar at their word and hope that it stays put. If I end up having any problems, then I will try to engineer something else. :dizzy:

Thanks again for all the input.

I don't think you will have a problem with the nutzert falling out. They do hold pretty well. I think the problems happen when the bolt gets frozen in the nutzert after being on a long time and maybe things like water and road salt freezing them up. Then when you try to remove them you end up spinning one in the hole. Being in AZ I think you should be fine. That being said, maybe I will find me a nice skid plate on the freeway :pepper:

Incidentally, does anyone know off hand what size nutsert one would use to attach a Renegade light bar?

When I put my transfer case on, I was short a nutzert. I just bolted it on but on the other ones, no problems since.

6mm interior thread. So they should be 9mm (almost 3/8) outer diameter.

You may want to edit that, you bolted what on what?

I used a newer style M bolt for the transfer, cut it in halve and slide it in the chassis. Much stronger imo.

Nothing to worry about .. just a grammatical misunderstanding.. 8)

There should have been a comma or period & a new sentence.

Sometimes it is hard to understand text, and you can't really "read" how people speak.

Very true. The general idea, was that I was short a nutsert, and used a bolt, that was supplied be me, to finish the job.

+1 to drilling through the cross member and using a bolt/nut/washers

Because I broke EVERY bolt that came with the skid plates, and had to drill anyway.

I installed the trans and xfer skids no problem with the nutzert tool that came with the transfer skid package, when i removed them a year later to clean and fix them (trans skid entered trans pan by a inch or two) i could not get the damm bolts out, i sheared off every one.

THEN i drilled the cross members.

Does anyone know if the nutsert's for the skid plates are the same 9mm diameter? I need to get a few more to finish hooking up my skids. I've also got one nutsert that didn't torque down and is just spinning so I'll have to find a way to make it go in.
