I have a 2006 CRD. I have been reading a lot about removing the MAF sensor, preventing the EGR system from working. Is this truly a good thing for the vehicle? Has there been any problems with malfunctions or general vehicle problems with the MAF sensor removed?

I am also wondering about the exhaust/muffler system. With the CRD, is it a positive to change out the factory parts or is all the talk about upgrades for personal aesthetics?

Thanks to all that weigh in and help a fellow Jeep owner.

Howdy Thomas - welcome to LOST

There were several shortcuts when Chrysler 'developed' the CRD for the US market

ORM does not seem to have any impact on engine components - although you are modifying an EPA mandated emission control - that's the reason it's Off Road Mod - and if you run that way much there is a concern that the EGR will have carbon build up on it - however no one's had a problem yet.

you do need a Provent or EHM to prevent oil from being dumped into your intake manifold - the Provent would meet all EPA specs (and is a dealer installed option on Powerstrokes) but the stock design is bad.

The muffler - is basically the same muffler used in the 2.4 and 3.7 Gas engines - and it reduces the exhaust size from 2 1/2" to 2" only at the muffler - that's a significant restriction the Turbo doesn't need - in fact the Turbo itself can be considered the muffler in most states.

ATXKJ,

Thanks for the response. What is Provent or EHM?

So it would be recommended to upgrade the muffler to at least 2 1/2" opening size?

I was also wondering about the tuners that are often talked about for CRD Liberty's on this page. Do these have any negative impacts on the vehicle? Will this tuner truly help the vehicle run better?

Peace.

This has the EHM - it's got a couple of photos on the Provent
http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=98&t=22703

basically the Closed Crankcase Ventilation system blows oil vapor out of the engine block and it's routed to the intake manifold - the Elephant Hose Mod - just vents it to atmosphere - the Provent puts a trap in the line to condense the oil out.

I put a Magnaflow 2 1/2" instead of stock - some folks have pulled the muffler out completely - anything that removes that restriction with improve turbo response.

The Tuners vary - I don't know that anyone has enough mileage to say for sure the reliability impact.

I'd be very cautious of any box that you plug into a line.

The ECU remaps from GDE and Inmotion are a better ideas - GDE sounds better but it costs more, and they're active participants on LOST.
