FYI - mine turned on every day of a Summer with 90+ days over 100F
as long as either the air or Coolant temp is below 70F
the plugs turn on for a couple of minutes (the dash light only comes on for a second)

If one of those suckers shatters in your engine you're looking at a very expensive repair. The last one I took out was split the entire length of the ceramic tip. Google VW ceramic glow plug failure for their experience with the same technology. I highly doubt that Chrysler will ever support us with the ECU update that would be required to drive more robust plugs.

Glow Plugs..Sounds pretty serious. Should they be checked every fall ? and is it easy to do.

No, for sure they will fail at some point but you can't predict when by visual inspection. Some will last a few months, some will last a few years, some will fail without any visual signs, some will crack and some will fragment in your cylinder :grim: . This unpredictability is part of the fun.

Now what's the risk of a glow plug fragmenting compared with any other cause of major engine failure? I'm not sure, but it's high enough for VW to believe that the cost of warranty repairs would exceed the cost of implementing a recall.

Based on this and your previous post, I think it will be a good idea to check them annually, if it does have a crack or some other visual defect you can at least change it out before it falls into the cylinder.

I brought this one back from the dead as I am looking for a CRD for myself. Is there a way to "sticky" it at the top of the page?

It mentions some of the differences between the '05 and '06 models. Another significant difference is the '05 models came with the 7/70 powertrain warranty and the '06 has 3/36.

Probably most 2005's have reached 70K miles by now.

A nationwide search on autotrader suggests otherwise. There are a large amount of them out there with 50-60K miles on them.

*But* the 7/70 is only transferable to the second owner, and then only at a $150 charge. If you're the third owner - oh well.

I supose that may be true for some that weren't driven on the yearly average of 15K a year. We get around 18K a year on ours. Some of those may be the lemon ones that nobody drove.

True dat! I hope a copy of the VIP report from Ma Mopar will help avoid the lemons.

What's up with the heater and wiring ? (I hate the heater in my Toyota cause it's either a blow torch or freezing...)

The 06 wire harness rubs through at the top of the fuel filter housing braket. The 06's harness was moved about a half an inch for some reason and it rubs through on the sharp metal edge. The heater resistors were different on the 06's as well, which has a TSB to fix it.

So it looks like I'm going through this Fuel Filter Housing mess right now. Is there a TSB on this or any silent recalls I can tell the dealership to look up? Dealership says the wiring harness needs to be replaced (Part cost $28.99) and the housing needs to be replaced (Part cost $138.99) because the plug on the harness melted into the socket in the housing. Oh yeah and labor adds another $175.

I'm fighting with my extended warranty provider (Mercury) who declined the claim the dealership submitted today. Nothing in the coverage saying why it wouldn't be covered. Been on hold for over an hour trying to get a human to talk to.

Any insight or help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Tim

Get this part, put it on yourself. Wiring harness from stealership if it doesn't come with this.

They are probably denying the claim because of "fuel contamination". It is a common out for warranty providers when it comes to fuel and cooling system components. Usually there is something explicitly written into the warranty about it being void if there is "contamination," and the burden is on the owner to prove that there was no contamination. I ran into this with a S-10 Blazer I owned when the coolant all turned to chalk through "mystery" electrolysis.
